Why These Right-Wing Trump Critics are Bad, Actually: An Opinion

Recently, there has been a surge in right-wing figures who are becoming critical of Trump and his policies, alongside being critical of the Israeli government. While I may understand why some people may feel the need to support some of these figures, considering the absolute insanity of the Trump administration and Israel’s brutal campaign in Gaza, I will have to draw a line, because as I will demonstrate throughout this piece, these figures are anything but deserving of our support.

First, let’s talk about the recent star and martyr among these people, Thomas Massie. He is a U.S. representative from Kentucky’s 4th congressional district, known for being critical of Trump for his handling of the Epstein Files and his war on Iran, and has opposed AIPAC and called what is happening in Gaza a genocide, which eventually cost him, as he lost his nomination to the Trump-backed Ed Gallrein. However, all this praise for him ignores major issues about Massie, which question his so-called “integrity.” Massie famously has the nickname “Mr. No” because, due to his libertarianism, he often opposes federal spending and foreign aid. And yes, all foreign aid. Famously, he is one of the most consistently anti-Ukraine voters in Congress. He voted against all aid packages to Ukraine, opposes sanctions, and has parroted Russian claims of “biolabs in Ukraine.” Besides aid, he even voted against a resolution condemning Russia’s illegal seizure of Crimea, along with the Russian kidnapping of Ukrainian children. Yes, you heard that right: he voted against condemning child trafficking. Supporters might use the defense that he is simply “anti-interventionist,” but this defense becomes weak considering he voted even against such symbolic resolutions as condemning an illegal annexation! Besides this, Massie has questioned climate change, and after French President Macron voiced his desire for the US to rejoin the Paris Climate Accords, Massie called him “a socialist militarist globalist science-alarmist.” In addition, he consistently voted against disaster relief, supporting it only when Kentucky was hit. Oh, and he also supports laws allowing raw milk to be transported across state borders. For context, raw milk is linked to a higher risk of milk-borne disease because it is unpasteurized, and its claimed benefits lack evidence.

Now, while Massie, at least, is consistent in his positions as a libertarian, the second person is not. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Yes, you heard me right. This far-right politician is currently lauded by some people for “standing up to Trump.” What they forgot, however, is that MTG has been one of the largest Trump supporters for quite some time, and the recent feud with Trump, involving his refusal to endorse her and her criticism of his dealings with Epstein Files and strikes on Iran, is very new. For quite some time, she has been one of Trump’s greatest supporters. She promoted the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen and was even interested in serving as his Secretary of Homeland Security. But what MTG became most infamous for, practically speaking, was her sheer conspiracism and unpleasant behavior during her tenure in office. The list is long, but some highlights: In 2018, when Camp Fire was ravaging California, she suggested it was caused by space lasers controlled by the Rothschilds. In 2024, during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, she claimed that the government can control the weather, implying the government used weather technology in order to get the hurricane into Republican-heavy voting districts. In addition, she claimed multiple shootings were false flags, from Las Vegas to Sandy Hook, even ending up harassing Parkland shooting survivor, David Hogg, and calling him “#littleHitler.” Add to this 9/11 trutherism, repeating Russian propaganda so much that it led to her getting the nickname “Moscow Marjorie” from former Republican congressman Ken Buck, and her calls for violence against transgender congresswoman Sarah McBride, and you can clearly see the true face of MTG. So just because she now calls what Israel is doing genocide does not erase all the horrendous nonsense she said before and the multiple people she harassed. She remains a dangerous far-right figure, not an ally.

This by no means is a complete list of right-wing figures lauded for their recent critical position on Trump and Israel. There is also Joe Kent, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, but the point remains. Just because these figures criticize Trump and Israel does not make them our allies in the struggle, since they still hold incredibly harmful political ideas, and being right on one thing does not erase being catastrophically wrong and harmful on others. I hope more people realize it soon.
