Students make headway on crisis simulation

Congratulations to the 18 sIMG_5150-atudents from six high schools who participated last Saturday in Civitas’ first crisis simulation of the year. The issue was that the Ukraine no longer felt that it could safely secure the 500 pounds of enriched uranium in its possession.  This is the uranium that goes into nuclear bombs.  The Ukraine was willing to sell it for half a billion dollars; perhaps working with the United Nations; perhaps only with single countries.

Students divided into two working groups and focused on key issues such as what countries should be allowed to purchase enriched uranium; what the uranium would be used for; how it would be transported; how much would go to poor countries to build nuclear power plants.

Students had remarkable facilitators within their ranks who kept everyone on target and ensured that the conversation was solution oriented.  Adopting a Civitas motto, the students were “hard on the problem but soft on the people.”

Participating students were: from Ladue: Amanda Steiner; from Maplewood-Richmond Heights: Holly Clemons, Jamie Tipton; from Nerinx Hall: Beatrice Connaghan, Sarah Connolly, Kira Lovell, Claire Luna, Emma Mitchell, Katherine Ward, Ava Ward; from Parkway Central: Mikayla Abernathy, Ramon Gibbs, Kyle Riley; from Timberland: Hafsa Mansoor; from Webster Groves: Will Burchett, Charlotte Gavin, Ravena Kerr-Grant, Virginia Lee.
