Resolution GA-01 April 12

Re.:                             Helping Air Pollution in India
Submitted to:             General Assembly

Submitted by:            South Korea

Date:                           April 12, 2019

Whereas Article 3 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.”, and

Whereas Article 25, section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care, and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age, or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”, and

Knowing that India is trading partners with a majority of first world countries, and

Understanding that India has eleven out of the world’s twelve most polluted cities, as measured by particulate pollution, including Kanpur, India which has the dirtiest air globally, and

Keeping in mind that 75% of all deaths caused by air pollution in India happened in rural areas which are highly impacted by annual crop stubble burns that result as farmers alternate between rice and wheat crops throughout the year, and

Fully aware that past air pollution crisis in India have caused car crashes, flight cancellations, and school closings,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. The United Nations will start a program called Save Air in India which will provide the tools needed to stop annual crop stubble burns.
  2. Save Air in India will provide farmers in rural India with “happy seeders”, machines that will plant wheat seeds without having to remove the rice plant stubble from the previous harvest. Starting in 2021, for the following 5 years, Save Air in India will distribute approximately 12,000 “happy seeders” a year. This is because it would be more practical to distribute the happy seeders to farmers over a longer period of time then just attempting to distribute them all at once. This should effectively eliminate the need to burn crop stubble by 2026
  3. Save Air in India will need $120 million over five years to buy the “happy seeders” and provide training for farmers. The five-year timeline will permit orderly and efficient implementation throughout the country.
  4. The funds will be collected from India’s top seven trading partners (United States, United Arab Emirates, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom, and Germany) which directly benefit from India’s crop growth and collectively spend $139.4 billion annually in trade.
  5. Every year, particulate pollution will be measured and compared to historical data. By the end of the five-year period, we expect a reduction in particulate pollution of at least 25% and a reduction of air pollution-related deaths by 40%.

Re.:                             High Mortality Rate in Sierra Leone
Submitted to:             General Assembly

Submitted by:            Singapore

Realizing that over half of the population in Sierra Leone lives under the poverty line, and

Having considered that malnutrition is the greatest cause of child mortality in Sierra Leone, and

Guided by a civil war occurring in 1991-2001 over 1.5 million people were forced out of their homes, and

Keeping in mind that there was an Ebola outbreak at the same time, that is still going on today, and

Being aware of an estimated 1,165 mothers die every year for every 100,000 births in Sierra Leone,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. The UN will create the program, “They Matter Too.” We’ll begin by sending mosquito nets, squatting plates, first aid kits, deworming tablets, therapeutic milk, 24 square meter tents, family shelter tents, vaccine carriers, school in a box, and solar water pumps. Everything would be brought by helicopter to a place that would be preset.

  2. The program They Matter Too will cost approximately $3 million dollars. The money will come from dues ad donations from the 10 nations that pay the highest amount of dues. We will raise dues by 0.2% to reach our goal of $3 million.

  3. The program They Matter Too will last approximately 20 years. We will start with about 1,000 people and expand until the high mortality rate in Sierra Leone is reduced by 20%.

Resolution GA-03 April 12

Re.:                             Improving Healthcare in Sierra Leone
Submitted to:             General Assembly

Knowing that unsafe drinking water and lack of access to sanitation contributes to about 88% of deaths from diarrheal diseases.  Infection affects poor communities in parts of Africa, including Sierra Leone, that do not have access to safe drinking water, and

Alarmed that Sierra Leone has the lowest life expectancy and one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world, and

Concerned that contaminated water and related infections and parasites are one of the greatest contributing factors to deaths in Sierra Leone, and

Aware that Sierra Leone is a country that is 27,699 square miles with a total population of 7.6 million people,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. Identify one quadrant in Sierra Leone that will serve as a test area to determine if placing wells within a short walking distance (1.5 miles) will improve health and lower mortality rates within one year of their installation.
  2. 4500 wells will be placed within the 7,000 square mile quadrant and will each cost $7,000 for a total cost of $31,500,000.
  3. This project will be organized by the United Nations and financially supported by the 55 top nongovernmental organizations currently working to provide clean water and sanitation to Africa. The United Nations will provide half of the funding as a challenge grant with the understanding that if this concerted effort proves successful, the United Nations will use this data to solicit future financial support from member countries, private foundations, and additional nongovernmental organizations to expand this project throughout Africa within five years.

Re.:                             Air Pollution in China
Submitted to:             General Assembly

Submitted by:            Finland

Whereas Article 13 section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.”, and

Whereas Article 13 section 2 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.”, and

Whereas China had 1.1 million deaths in only one year, and

Noting that you are actually able to see the pollution in space, and

Concerned that one of the most polluted cities in China is Beijing,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

Action Plan:

  1. Create project Clean the Air. We could do this by having taxes that make it harder to produce pollute the air.

Funding:

  1. 10% of every $100 of the 10 major companies contributing the most to pollution.

Timeline:

  1. This is a project that can be started now.

Evaluation:

4. The UN should support this resolution because people are dying from the air that is supposed to be taken in. This needs to stop.

Resolution GA-05 April 12

Re.:                             Preserving the Sovereign Rights of Afghanistan
Submitted to:             General Assembly

Submitted by:            Afghanistan

Date:                           April 12, 2019

Whereas Article 18 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion of belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”, and

Deeply concerned that since the late 1800s, Afghanistan has been invaded and occupied by world superpowers who wanted to demolish our culture. These included Great Britain three times with the last in 1919, the United Soviet Socialist Republic from 1979-1989, and the United States of America and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) from 2001 to the present, and

Aware that since September 11, 2001, there have been 147,124 Afghani deaths due to uncalled for military aggression, and

Fearful that the death of these people represents cultural extinction and the loss of Afghanistan culture, and

Respecting that since 2009, the Taliban has valiantly continued to protect Afghanistan’s sovereign rights by fighting off foreign invaders, making them singly responsible for preserving the governance required for the nation’s survival, and

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. Demand that the United States of America and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) withdraw from Afghanistan by December 31, 2019.

  2. Sanction any country that refuses to withdraw. The fine shall be five million dollars per day and will be granted to the country of Afghanistan for rebuilding and cultural preservation.

Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.”, and

Concerned that Uganda has a very high infant mortality rate, 59.21 per 1,000 births, and

Alarmed that if clean water isn’t available the rate will increase, and

Knowing that pregnant mothers need clean water to nourish their babies,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. We are going to distribute 200 AFRIDEV Water Pumps to Uganda with 5,000 PH testing strips.
