*Special update!*Due to a conflict, our original speaker will not be able to attend. But we will have a speaker from the ACLU!
Saturday, January 10, Civitas is most pleased to be hosting, The Injustices of Poverty: How the legal system hurts poor people. It is a special Issues Roundtable at the Civitas office (map) from 9-11 am. (You can sign up by clicking here!)
It’s special because we will have a guest speaker, Michael Voss, from the Arch City Defenders. He has a short presentation and will then take questions from students. The Arch City Defenders is a group that provides legal assistance and other support to the working poor of St. Louis.
We might also be joined by another guest speaker, a youth activist from Ferguson.
The discussion from the Injustices of Poverty can cover a lot of ground including decriminalization, “Ban the box”, homelessness, Ferguson, excessive traffic fines, etc. The main focus of this Issues Roundtable is not to point fingers or assign blame. It is to look at how the justice system is often set up in ways that disenfranchise the poor and how to overcome those obstacles. The event is open to all high school students and teachers, but we request that you RSVP.
