Update: our guest speaker for this event has had to cancel for unforeseen circumstances. We are changing the agenda for the event. You can view what we will be discussing by clicking here.
Last year, Civitas had a great Issues Roundtable on The injustices of Poverty: How the legal system hurts poor people. We were fortunate to be joined by Michael J. Voss, a lawyer from the Arch City Defenders, who spoke about how the justice system is often set up in ways that disenfranchise poor people.
Now a year later, it’s time to revisit some of the issues that we discussed previously. (Decriminalization, ban the box, driving while black, excessive traffic fines, etc) Michael J. Voss will be returning to once again present Civitas students with a wealth of information about what has changed in the legal system and what hasn’t.
- Are municipalities still using fines and traffic tickets to pad their budgets?
- Are there still places in the STL region where you’re more likely to be pulled over based on your skin color?
- Will there be any issues to look out for in the upcoming 2016 elections?
RSVP now for this special event! This presentation will be April 30th, from 9-11 am at the Civitas office. (map) There will be a presentation and tons of time for Q&A.
