UNA-USA Leadership Summit: STL Leaders’ Advice on Leadership

This is an article from the Winter 2025 Civitas Examiner (Volume 2, No. 4) and was written by one of our students, Troy S. The opinions expressed here do not reflect those of Civitas other than respect for the value of open dialogue. On the 14-16th of November, UN-USA hosted a leadership summit in STL. For
the event, I had the privilege to interview the President of UNA-Saint Louis, Carlos
Suarez, about the event. When asked about stressing about something big, he said to
focus on the opportunity over stress. To get people involved, he said to involve everyone
possible, and make them feel heard. He also advised on this matter to make them feel heard
and extend your reach. He also said to make your team responsible for changes more
than yourself.

On another note, of the many speakers talking about different topics, many other good
pieces of advice were given. To prevent burnout, try not to make your members do more
than they are willing to. Make your leadership power others, not just yourself, and make
your team diverse. Tell your mission, make allies with similar goals, and use committees
to focus on certain tasks. Train your team to be able to carry on your legacy past your
time, and give them support. Have meetings during times people are able to attend.
When advertising, telling a story can be a great way to extend your message engagingly on social media. Recognize your members’ achievements, and ask them to personally join. To extend the message of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, talk about them and use symbols for them.

Youth leaders advised the older generations to help and make way for the youth in
leadership positions. They also tell youth leaders to speak up about what is important to
them. Another piece of advice was not be too loud or too quiet, but find the perfect spot
between.
