On August 11, Civitas hosted it’s annual Student Leader Lunch. The lunch is a meeting for students to learn about upcoming activities for the year, talk about recruiting, and share what issues are most important to them. This year’s meeting was well attended by 10 dedicated students from 7 different schools. A number of great ideas and possible discussion/guest speaker topics were brought up such as homelessness in St. Louis, the lifting of the Cuban Embargo, the Israel/Palestine conflict, school vouchers, the rights of U.S. territories, and others. We look forward to exploring these issues with students through out the year.
Information on the upcoming U.N. Economic Convention and volunteer opportunities for the Festival of nations were also discussed.
Last Saturday, August 8, Civitas also hosted a special beginning of the year teacher workshop for high school teachers. The main topics at the teacher workshop were possible Pulitzer projects for the school year, changes to the Model U.N. program, and details about the new Active Citizen Project. Teachers were very excited to learn more about these programs and there is talk of a multi-school collaborative project concerning money in politics. An additional meeting has been scheduled to discuss this idea in-depth.
