Student/Parent Bill of Rights - CIVITAS-STL
 Saturday, September 17, Civitas hosted an event for last year’s Honors Model UN students and incoming freshmen. It was a unique event, because we had their parents participate too. The goal was to split up into 2 groups and have the parents make a bill of rights for students and the student make a bill of right for parents. Both groups came up with wonderful suggestions and it inspired a fantastic dialogue. Here are the suggestions they came up with. (Photos from the event can be found here)

Bill of Parent’s Rights

  • All parents have the right to give and receive respect
  • All parents have the right to privacy
  • All parents have the right to know the academic performance of their kids
  • All parents have the right to know a school’s curriculum
  • All parents have the right to give reasonable punishment/consequences, i.e. grounding/blackouts from technology
  • All parents have the right to personal time for regaining mental/physical health
  • All parents have the right to control nonessential property
  • All parents have the right to an opinion
  • All parents have the right to give and receive help

Bill of Student’s Rights

  • All students have the right to learn in a way that suits them in style and environment
  • All students have the right to be heard and respected
  • All students have the right to have an equal voice in decision-making in matters in which they are directly affected
  • All students have the right to be and feel safe in their environment
  • All students have the right to access technology when and how they see fit
  • All students have the right to privacy with their social media
  • All students have the right to make mistakes

Bill of Teacher’s Rights

  • All teachers have a right to work in an environment conducive to learning with adequate class size in numbers and space
  • All teachers have the right to be treated respectfully by administration, other staff, students, and teachers
  • All teachers have a right to a private, independent life separate from the job
  • All teachers have the right to working no more than 50 hours a week on base salary
  • All teachers have the right to refuse extra responsibilities, even if paid, beyond the school day expectations
  • All teachers have a right to be paid at a professional level
  • All teachers have the right to constructively criticize students, both behavior and performance
  • Teachers have the right to decide when innovation beyond the curriculum is appropriate
