Resolution GA-01 April 13

Re.:                             Deforestation

Submitted to:             General Assembly

Submitted by:            Canada

Date:                           April 13, 2015

Whereas Article 23 section 3 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.”, and

Whereas Article 25, section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care, and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age, or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”, and

Whereas Article 27, section 1 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.”, and

Alarmed that the total world forest loss is approximately 7.3 hectares per year, and

Shocked that over 1.6 billion people worldwide rely greatly upon forest products for part, if not all, of their livelihoods, and

Dismayed that over 121 natural remedies can be located in the rainforest, and

Regrets that the main contributing factors to man-made deforestation are overpopulation, poverty, and unequal land access,

Be It Hereby Resolved That The General Assembly:

  1. The United Nations will begin a program that monitors deforestation and provides homes and vital supplies to those who are forced to cut down forests to earn a livelihood.
  2. It will do this by building ten facilities centralized in areas of high deforestation in the five countries with the highest deforestation rate: Honduras, Nigeria, the Philippines, Benin, and Ghana.
  3. These facilities will provide free education for loggers and any interested party on how to crossbreed trees to find or create more resilient, faster-growing varieties of trees.
  4. These varieties of trees will then be planted in nearby facilities and used to replace the natural trees as a staple of deforestation.
  5. These facilities will be staffed by recent graduates of universities from the top 25 GDP countries in the UN who major in botany and biology. These graduates’ room and board will be paid, and up to $75,000 of their student loans will be paid by the program. Alumni of this program will also be employed.
  6. This will be funded by increasing annual dues owed by 1 percent on the 25 countries with the highest gross domestic product, which will create a total budget of $300,000.
  7. If, after five years, deforestation has decreased by at least five percent, the project will be continued in other countries such as Nepal, North Korea, Ecuador, and Haiti.
  8. If there is no improvement, this project will be terminated.

Whereas Article 25, section 2 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born or in out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.”, and

  3. These towns will be selected by the highest child-death rates and lowest population per square mile.
  4. They will go door-to-door in the rural towns to help pregnant women and people with children under 3 years of age to prevent diseases from killing the children. 5. Malaria support will be provided, and people living below the poverty line will be given financial support.
  6. To accomplish this we wish to raise dues of the top five wealthiest countries by 0.5%. We will use this money to purchase hospital tents and raise the wages of doctors and hire more of them. We will also use the money to help poor-income families raise children.
