Urban Go-Team

One of the goals of Civitas is to “promote local and global citizenship.” While most of our programs focus on the international, we keep in mind the reality that students can “think globally and act locally.” The Urban Go-Team provides high-school students with opportunities to explore St. Louis, seeing live evidence of the issues that affect quality of life, work, play and education in any metropolitan area.
Urban Go-Team offers experiences not available through textbooks or in a classroom setting. Go-Team participants absorb knowledge through guided field trips, on-the-street observations, and lively interactions with government officials, urban planners, journalists, environmentalists, bankers , developers, and labor leaders.
These interactions promote awareness of current issues, such as land use, eminent domain, sprawl, urban design, planning, zoning, density, economic disparity, finance, taxing, historic preservation, environmental concerns, transportation planning, and many others. Urban Go-Team’s ultimate goal is to encourage students to become knowledgeable, active citizens of any community in which they choose to live and work.
There are occasional Urban Go-Team activities during the school year. A theme for Spring & Summer 2010 will be set by mid-February and registration will then open. Student selection for 2010 will be completed by mid-March whereupon activities will begin.
