Dear Arthur,

"Chill" is the word of the day, describing the weather and what South Carolina congressman James Clyburn suggested that Bill Clinton do with regard to his criticism of Barack Obama.  Of lesser imporance but closer proximity, Civitas is chilling its visible activity for a week.  But what a week we just completed and what an array of engaging activities we have ahead.

"The Heights" (Richmond Heights Community Center) Middle School MUN Teacher Meeting #3 (Resolution Selection)

1 The discussion was previously scheduled for Sat., Jan. 26.  Because of an entrance exam at Crossroads that morning, we changed the date to Feb. 2.  Simultaneous to the discussion will be Make-Up Prep Session #1 for the Active Citizenship Conference for those who missed it last Saturday.

2 The two prep sessions for the Conference were previously scheduled to run until Noon.  In the interest of humaneness, we have moved that time up to 11:30 AM.  Thank Gloria for that one!

Global Gateway Program with Pulitzer Center

Pictured above is freelance journalist Ruthie Ackerman along with Jon Sawyer, director of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.  They were in St. Louis last week to present information on the plight of former child soldiers in Liberia and elsewhere in west Africa.  Here they are presenting at Collinsville High School.  They also met with students from Lindbergh, Maplewood-Richmond Heights, Parkway West, Rosati-Kain, SoldanSt. Joseph's Academy as well as one middle school, Lift for Life Academy (charter school in the Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis).

In advance of the visit, students had literally submitted hundreds of on-line questions and comments to Ruthie.  Special thanks to all teachers who facilitated the work of the students.  We are also most appreciative of the work of those students who engaged in the on-line conversation.

The conversation was lively at all five venues for Ruthie and Jon.  Students shared a sense of curiosity and concern about the issue; their views on how to help the former child soldiers varied quite a bit.  The conversation continues as Ruthie will continue the dialogue with students who post questions and comments on the Global Gateway blog site by clicking here.

The Global Gateway program continues and teachers and students can begin preparing for the Spring visit on the HIV/AIDS crisis in the Caribbean.

Prep Session #1 for Active Citizenship Conference

We're not going to even try to explain what happened at the first prep session for the Civitas Conference on Active, Responsible, and Sustainable Citizenship because (a) the depth of the students' thinking and words cannot be explained by one pedestrian writer, and (b) we promised confidentiality in order to promote trust.  Let us simply say that we started with the personal as we move on our journey to global concerns.

For those who are enrolled for the conference, we have a make-up prep session on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Crossroads (map) from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM.  Hopefully we can catch the magic again.  The next week (Feb. 9) will be Prep Session #2 where we will have a group of exceptional adults meeting with students to discuss how they have remained visionary as they have gotten older.  The conference itself is Feb. 15-16 and other activities will certainly continue after the conference.  Info that you need for the conference is below:
