Dear Arthur, If you're a high school student who enjoys learning about and participating in global issues, Civitas has a host of activities in January and February that are down your alley. The Global Gateway program with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting returns to St. Louis in nine days as we study the plight of former child soldiers in Liberia. In less that two weeks, we have ou first prep session for the Active Citizenship Conference. Please check out the activities on the calendar below. Not included on the calendar but extremely important are Lisa's visits this week to the following middle schools: (a) Pattonville Heights, (b) Remington Traditional, (c) Queen of All Saints, (d) St. Roch, (e) St. Gabriel, (f) St. Margaret of Scotland, (g) Hixson Middle, (h) John Burroughs, (i) Crossroads, (j) Hoech Middle, (k) Holman Middle, (l) St. Dominic, and (m) Saeger Middle. Best of luck to Lisa's whose "week from hell" is the first full week of the closing of Highway 40! Upcoming Civitas Events (Actual events in bold -- always subject to change when change occurs!) Global Gateway Program with Pulitzer Center We want to remind all teachers and students involved in the Global Gateway program that we are approaching our project on former child soldiers from Liberia. Journalist Ruthie Ackerman and Pulitzer Center Director Jon Sawyer will be in St. Louis for the program from Jan. 17-18, 2008. We urge all involved teachers and students to carefully read all Global Gateway correspondence that we send you this week and next.

Terrific Discussion Group last Saturday Special thanks to the students and teacher (Darlene Donegan from University City High School) who came to last Saturday's discussion. It was again lively and informative. Major topics of consideration were capital punishment and policies by casinos to only hire B.P. ("Beautiful People"). Our next discussion will be on Groundhog Day (Sat., Feb. 2) as we spend considerable time on the Global Gateway program and the Active Citizenship Conference. Not to be forgotten is that today is the New Hampshire Primary. The results from the "Granite State" will have tremendous impact on the political future of the U.S. as well as subsequent Civitas discussions. For what it's worth, we found that MSNBC had thoughtful coverage of the Iowa Caucuses last Thursday night.
