Dear Arthur,

We're back in action and set for a very busy five months over the remainder of the school year.  Below is our calendar of upcoming events.  Not included on the calendar but extremely important are Lisa's visits next weeks to the following middle schools: (a) Pattonville Heights, (b) Remington Traditional, (c) Queen of All Saints, (d) St. Roch, (e) St. Gabriel, (f) St. Margaret of Scotland, (g) Hixson Middle, (h) John Burroughs, (i) Crossroads, (j) Hoech Middle, (k) Holman Middle, (l) St. Dominic, and (m) Saeger Middle.  Best of luck to Lisa's whose "week from hell" is the first full week of the closing of Highway 40!

-- Comfort Inn & Spazio's Active Citizenship Conference

1 The Active Citizenship Conference is Fri.-Sat., Feb. 15-16, 2008.  Also, we have changed the date of our second "prep session" for the conference to Feb. 9, 2008 from Feb. 2, 2008.  This way students can campaign on the Saturday before the Missouri presidential primary on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

2 Because of an entrance exam at Crossroads on the morning of Jan. 26, 2008, we need to make different arrangements for this discussion session.  Please respond to the following survey to give us your choices on what works best for you.

Global Gateway Program with Pulitzer Center

We want to remind all teachers and students involved in the Global Gateway program that we are approaching our project on former child soldiers from Liberia.  Journalist Ruthie Ackerman and Pulitzer Center Director Jon Sawyer will be in St. Louis for the program from Jan. 17-19, 2008.  We will send vital information to teachers later this week and right after the holidays.

 For Active Citizenship Conference:

The next major Civitas event is the February Civitas Conference on Active, Responsible, and Sustainable Citizenship. The conference is little more than six weeks away and the first prep session is two weeks from this Saturday.  We hope that thoughtful high school students are interested.  If you are, please sign up now by clicking here.

Discussion Group this Saturday, Jan. 5

It may be a little wet, but the temperature range this Saturday should be 46o - 53o, not bad for this time of year.  And speaking about decent weather, the high tomorrow in Des Moines, IA is expected to be a balmy 33o, making a trip to the political caucuses for hearty Iowans a piece of cake.  Yes, on Saturday we'll be prepared to discuss the results from Iowa as well as the prospects for New Hampshire next Tuesday.  And we lest we forget, the Missouri primary (not to be discounted) is less than five weeks away, on Feb. 5.  We are reminded by Rosati-Kain senior Morgan DeBaun that any student who will be 18 by that date is eligible to vote in the primary.  Unless you cannot find a candidate to your liking, we urge you to exercise your right as a citizen to actively participate in the primary.  Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all agree that there is a need for tremendous change; you can make your voice heard.

We'll have room for plenty of other topics, ranging from turmoil in Pakistan and Kenya to St. Louis sans Highway 40.  As always, we're open to any and all topics from students.  You can send suggestions to us ag [email protected]

The discussion is at Crossroads (map) from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.  If you generally use I-64/US-40, obviously it would be best to allocate more time.  Anyone who crosses the interesection of Lindbergh Blvd. & Highway 40 should remember that Lindbergh will be blocked at 40 over the weekend as they tear down the bridge.
