Middle School Student Workshop Big Success

The Middle School Model UN program held one of its most exciting events of the year with our student workshop at the Chase Park Plaza on Friday, November 16th.  Over 650 students converged on the Khorassan Ballroom and enjoyed an action-packed morning.  Students learned about the United Nations and the Model UN program through a PowerPoint presentation, participated in a resolution simulation, and were introduced to websites helpful for choosing resolution topics.  The morning ended with an energetic, interactive performance by the Brazilian trio Samba Bom, a true treat for students and teachers alike.  Civitas was pleased with the attentiveness and participation of the middle schoolers!

The focus of the program now turns toward Civitas’ visits to all twenty-five schools in December and January.  This week we’ll be contacting you to propose a date and time for us to come and meet with your students.  Please check with your school’s master calendar and get back to us about whether that date will work or not.  The classroom visits generally introduce students to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and cover how to go about writing their UN-style resolution.  Prior to our visit we ask that students have researched the country they are representing and have a basic understanding of the problems they face.  If you have any questions about scheduling your classroom visit, please email Lisa ([email protected]) or call her at 314-865-4704.

High School Students Prepare for Conference

Civitas high school students have the successful Fall session behind them and now look forward to the February Civitas Conference on Active, Responsible, and Sustainable Citizenship.

Between now and the dates of the conference (Fri.-Sat., Feb. 15-16), we will have six Saturday sessions; some that are solely discussion groups; others that focus more on preparation for the conference.

New interactive HIV /AIDS information on Pulitzer Web Site

In the Spring of 2008, the Global Gateway Project (with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting) will focus on combatting HIV / AIDS in the Caribbean.  The Center has a new interactive web site on the project with includes a mixture of photos, video, slide shows, narratives, text, and maps.  It is very user friendly.  We recommend that you visit it by clicking here.
