VOL. VII, No. 7;  Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Dear Arthur,

Latest Civitas News: . High School   Middle School   Calendar for all

Our 1-Q-S (One Question Survey)

It was two years ago this Wednesday (August 29) that Hurricane Katrinia slashed and smashed its way into New Orleans.  This survey contains one and only one question about --  "repairing the damage."

Who Can Best Help Post-Katrina New Orleans

High School Discussion Group & More on Saturday, Sept. 1

We want to remind you that the Civitas model U.N. "season" begins on Saturday, September 1 with the first discussion group of the year. Topics range from U.S. presence in Iraq to single gender vs. co-ed schools; from immigration issues to "What's our fixation with Paris H." If none of our suggestions fit your fancy, come up with your own idea and throw it out to other students!

We'll have several Saturday sessions in September that are discussion group only; later we'll move into model U.N. prep. sessions.

The September 1 session will be at Crossroads School, 500 DeBaliviere (63112) [map].

Students who were in "Urban Go-Team" or who are just plain interested in urban issues can stay later for lunch. We will either (a) have a speaker from Michelson Realty to talk about the Hadley Township project in Richmond Heights, or (b) a showing of a movie, most likely "Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore." Those of you on the Urban Go-Team have received additional invitations for this; we could really use your R.S.V.P.s. Anyone else interested in becoming part of the Urban Go-Team is welcome to join in.

High School Faculty Advisors ..... our first and only meeting for you (because we know that your spare time is sparse and precious) is a week from this Saturday, September 8, at Crossroads.  This is a 'two-fer' with student discussion going on from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and the faculty advisor meeting from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM.  We'll go over your limited responsibilities (except those involved in the Global Gateway project with the Pulitzer Center) and answer any and all questions.  Your welcome to stay for the second hour of discussion with students.

First Middle School Teacher Meeting on September 10

                    ,

Report from Lisa Granich-Kovarik, Middle School Model U.N. Coordinator:

It's hard to believe summer vacation is already winding down!  I hope you had a wonderful break and are ready for a new school year.  Before things get too hectic, I wanted to check in with all of you about your participation in the Middle School Model United Nations program.

  • First, are you interested in participating in Model UN this year?  I hope so!  Please let me know if you'll be participating in the program by emailing me () or calling me (865-4704 or 367-6480).  Please do this as soon as possible (it should just take a minute).  If you can give me a ballpark figure of how many students you think will be participating, that would be helpful. Also, if you know of any other middle school teachers who might be interested in the program, please pass along their names and contact information to me so that I can speak with them.
  • Second, I wanted to let you know what the important dates are for this year's program.
    • Monday, September 10: (4:00-5:00, Richmond Heights Community Center) This meeting will provide an overview of the program for the year so it is important that all teachers new to Model UN attend.  It's purely optional for teachers who have participated in the program already.
    • Monday, October 15: (4:00-5:00, Richmond Heights Community Center) mandatory meeting for all teachers in the program.  We'll be choosing our countries, General Assembly dates, and finalizing plans for the student workshop.
    • Friday, November 16: (9:30-11:30, Chase-Park Plaza) student workshop
    • Monday February 25: (4:00-5:00, Richmond Heights Community Center) mandatory teachers' meeting.  We'll be deciding on resolutions for the General Assemblies and discussing final preparations for the sessions.
    • Wednesdays in April, first two weeks of May: (9:00-12:00 Creve Coeur Government Center) Spring General Assembly sessions.
  • Finally, has any of your contact information changed?  If your email address or phone numbers at school or home have changed, it would be very helpful if you could pass along that information to me.

I enjoyed working with all of you last year-I hope you're on board for this year as well!  I think we'll have a terrific year.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Lisa Granich-Kovarik
