VOL. VII, No. 2;  Monday, July 9, 2007

Dear Arthur,

During these summer months, the Civitas newsletter will be published on an "as-needed" basis until early August.  We'll keep you informed of all important happenings with Civitas.

Today's newsletter includes (Note: You can now click on the blue hyperlinks below to go directly to the story!):

WE THOUGHT THIS MIGHT INTEREST YOU

Last month, TIME MAGAZINE ran a cover story on "What We Can Learn From JFK."  With Campaign 2008 already in full swing, we thought that you might be interested in this series of articles.  Two things that you might want to keep in mind in approaching these articles: (a) While Time makes note of President Kennedy's extra-curricular activities with women other than his wife, there is no expose with titillating new information, and (b) Time paints a generally very positive view of JFK and his presidency.  We agree with Time that there is a great deal that we can learn in choosing our next president by studying the history of the Kennedy Administration.  We welcome you to share your thoughts on "What We Can Learn From JFK" on our blog by clicking here.

Urban Go-Team Canvasses Hadley Township Again this Saturday

The Civitas Urban-Go-Team returns to the Hadley Township area in Richmond Heights, MO this Saturday, July 14 for another day of canvassing as part of its ongoing study of the neighborhood.  Hadley Township is an "inner-ring suburb" of St. Louis that is experiencing considerable neighborhood change.  This change will accelerate in coming months as many of the residents in the 181 households will be bought out and given notices that most of them will have to find a new place to live and move within 90 days of that notice.  A new development by Michelson Co. will be the new shape of the neighborhood within a few years.

On Saturday, June 30, Civitas students divided into two groups.  Students in Group 1 were Rachel Pinson (M-RH, 2008) and Randi Simmons (M-RH, 2009).  Those on Group 2 were Allison Reed (Rosati-Kain, 2008) and Lonnie Stuckey (M-RH, 2009).  Between them they took 94 photos as part of the documentation process of what the neighborhood looks like now.  In addition, they conducted several enlightening interviews with residents.  As evidenced by the photo above, some residents are clearly opposed to having their homes taken by eminent domain.  At the same time, many residents look forward to the price that they will receive for their home once the buy-out is finalized.

We hope to complete photographing all dwellings and businesses in the neighborhood.  Time permitting, we will also interview some of the parents.

Students and staff should meet at the Maplewood-Richmond Heights Community Center (map) at 10:00 AM and work (with breaks for food and other relaxation) until 1:00 PM.

The week-long Urban Go-Team project will begin on Monday, July 30 and run through Friday, August 3.  We will have more information on that in our next newsletter.

If you are not yet in the Go-Team and are interested in learning more about it or in joining the team now, e-mail us at [email protected].
