Urban Go-Team
Canvasses Hadley Township
area
This past Saturday, June 30, 2007,
four Civitas students continued canvassing of the Hadley
Township area in Richmond Heights, MO. This is an
"inner-ring suburb" of St. Louis that is experiencing
considerable neighborhood change. This change will
accelerate in coming months as many of the residents in the 181
households will be bought out and given notices that most of
them will have to find a new place to live and move within
90 days of that notice. A new development by Michelson Co. will be
the new shape of the neighborhood within a few years.
The Civitas students divided into two
groups. Students in Group 1 were Rachel Pinson (M-RH, 2008) and
Randi Simmons
(M-RH, 2009). Those on Group 2 were Allison Reed (Rosati-Kain, 2008)
and Lonnie Stuckey
(M-RH, 2009). Between them they took 94 photos as part of
the documentation process of what the neighborhood looks like
now. In addition, they conducted several
enlightening interviews with residents. As evidenced by
the photo above, some residents are clearly opposed to having
their homes taken by eminent domain. At the same time, many
residents look forward to the price that they will receive for
their home once the buy-out is finalized.
On
Saturday, July 14,
Civitas will return to the neighborhood to complete
photographing all dwellings and businesses in the
neighborhood. We will meet at the Maplewood-Richmond
Heights Community Center (map) at 10:00
AM and work (with breaks for food and other
relaxation) until 1:00 PM.
The
week-long Urban Go-Team project will begin on Monday, July 30 and run through
Friday, August
3. We will have more information on that
in our next newsletter.
