Urban Go-Team Begins Documentation of Hadley Township area

Last Saturday, May 12, a Civitas Urban Go-Team crew gathered vital information in the Hadley Township area of Richmond Heights prior to planned demolition of the neighborhood in six months.  We focused on the first of five sub-areas within the neighborhood, photographing every home and other structure that may well be in the line of a bulldozer.  Special thanks to DuBourg junior Jeff Yeckel who once again did an outstanding job behind the camera, capturing the essence of a neighborhood and memories that are slated to be erased by the end of the year.

To the left is a photo of Jeff speaking with a resident on Douglas Way in the northeastern section of Hadley Township.  It appears that residents have been receiving conflicting information about who will be affected by the buy-out and what recourse they might have to "fight city hall" and the developer regarding "fair value" for their home.  While it is not the role of Civitas to take sides in a neighborhood conflict, we do want to facilitate bringing information to light, especially when students can be part of that process.  Considerable change is expected this summer and Civitas is looking for more students who want to follow this story as well as study the general issue of "the rich and the poor" in St. Louis.
While our special one-week Urban Go-Team project will be from Monday, July 30 - Friday, August 3, we are would like to work with interested students in June and July on special issues in the Hadley Township area.  If you are interested in either participating in Hadley Township activities or in our one-week Urban Go-Team "rich and poor" session, please call us at (314) 367-6480 or e-mail us at [email protected].

Middle School Model U.N. Wraps Up This Week

clicking here.

Our final middle school activity of the year is our teacher meeting at Chevy's Restaurant in Crestwood next Monday, May 21 from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.  See the article below for more details.

Good Time had by all at Civitas Picnic!

The food was terrific; no hitter in softball made an out, no pitcher threw a ball; the conversation was replete with intellectual dialogue and pedestrian gossip.  It was another terrific Civitas spring picnic last Saturday at Junior High Park in Maplewood.  Special thanks to Bobbi Clemons for making arrangements to have the picnic at the park and for also supplying all the food and beverages!

The picnic was our final high school activity for the 2006-2007 school year.  We want to thank all students and teachers who collaborated to make this another successful year.  As we look forward to next year we will post our preliminary calendar for 2007-2008 within the next three weeks.

Final Middle School Teacher Meeting next
Monday, May 21 at Chevy's Restaurant in Crestwood

Now that all middle school Spring 2007 sessions are history, middle school teachers can gather at Chevy's Mexican Restaurant in Crestwood on Monday, May 21 to celebrate the end of the school year; to reflect upon how the school year went and to brainstorm ideas for improvement next year.

In previous years we have met at the Chevy's on Olive Street Road near I-170, but with the heavy construction in that area now, we are going with the more reliable Crestwood Chevy's.

The address of the Chevy's is 158 Crestwood Plaza; St. Louis, MO  63126.  The phone number is (314) 968-8485.  You can access a map of the area by ADDITIONAL LINKS
