Suburban Journals Cover Pulitzer Project in St. Louis

Our thanks to the Suburban Journals for giving extensive coverage to the St. Louis visit in late April of Jon Sawyer, Nathalie Applewhite, and Stephanie Hanes from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting.  Their work at Parkway West High School, St. Joseph's Academy, Collinsville High School, and Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School was given front page coverage in the May 2 edition of the West County Journal.  Additional coverage was given in the Collinsville Herald.

Special thanks to reporter Erin Taylor from the Journal who not only wrote a terrific story on the Pulitzer visit, but actually wrote all three front page stories in last Wednesday's edition.  This is not the first time that she has taken on such responsibility.  We truly respect her skill, style, and work ethic.  Ms. Taylor also took the photo reprinted (so far without permission) in this story.

"Urban Go-Team" resumes on Saturday, May 12

The Civitas Urban Go-Team will continue its work in the Hadley Township area of Richmond Heights on Saturday, May 12.  We will meet at Crossroads (map) at 9:00 AM and after short preparation we will drive to the area to take photos, measurements, etc.  We will work until noon, then take a break and then head to Junior High School Park in Maplewood for our annual Civitas picnic.

Further work in Hadley Township will take place in early and mid summer.  Our special one-week Urban Go-Team project looking at a host of issues in the St. Louis area will be from Monday, July 30 - Friday, August 3.

Middle School Model U.N. Wraps Up This Week

After three more terrific Middle School model U.N. sessions last week, we'll "play it again" one more time this week at the Creve Coeur Government Center, 300 No. New Ballas Road; 63141.

Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we had students from North Kirkwood Middle School, Northwest Valley Middle School, Loyola Academy, Saeger Middle School (Fort Zumwalt), and McKinley Classical Junior Academy (St. Louis).  They did an outstanding job and we covered a variety of timely issues.

Our final middle school activity of the year is our teacher meeting at Chevy's Restaurant in Crestwood on Monday, May 21 from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.  See the article below for more details.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to email Lisa at (
) or call her at (314) 865-4704.

Civitas Picnic on Saturday, May 12

This year's Civitas spring picnic will be this Saturday, May 12 from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 PM at Junior High Park in Maplewood (click here for map).  We will provide beverages and light snacks; we ask that you bring what you would like to bar-b-que.

The park has picnic tables under shelter, clean restrooms, and fields for softball and other sports.  Most of all, it's a great environment for chatting, joking, and just generally having a great time.  We invite students, teachers, and parents to join us for this, our final event of the 2006-2007 school year.

Final Middle School Teacher Meeting on
Monday, May 21 at Chevy's Restaurant in Crestwood

When the date has finally dusted, middle school teachers can gather at Chevy's Mexican Restaurant in Crestwood on Monday, May 21 to celebrate the end of the school year; to reflect upon how the school year went and to brainstorm ideas for improvement next year.

In previous years we have met at the Chevy's on Olive Street Road near I-170, but with the heavy construction in that area now, we are going with the more reliable Crestwood Chevy's.

The address of the Chevy's is 158 Crestwood Plaza; St. Louis, MO  63126.  The phone number is (314) 968-8485.  You can access a map of the area by clicking here.

We'll gather at 4:00 PM.  You have the option of staying and snacking or hanging out longer for dinner.  Your call; we're happy to be with you!
