Middle School Model U.N. Sessions Off to Excellent Start

After nearly seven months of preparation, middle school model U.N. sessions had the first of their nine Spring sessions last week.    We had very lively debate and discussion and some excellent resolutions passed.

The schools that participated last Wednesday were City Academy, Hoech Middle School (Ritenour District), Lift for Life Academy, and St. Margaret School.  On Thursday, these schools participated: Cathedral School, St. Francis Cabrini, St. Mary Magdalen, and St. Roch.

Below you will see a listing of the resolutions that were considered.  You can click on the hotlinks and read each of them.

"Urban Go-Team" Frozen Out; Next Event on Saturday, March 31

For those of you who missed last Saturday's Urban Go-Team activity, in reality you missed a great discussion.   Either it was just too cold for us to go out and explore (36o), or at least one staff member (Arthur) was too much of a wimp.  In any event, we stayed indoors at Crossroads and had an outstanding conversation on the current issues related to a possible state take-over of the St. Louis public schools.  Special thanks to Jessica Davie (Soldan, '07) who provided us with such a wealth of primary source material to help us in discussing the situation.  [By the way, you can view a 19 minute video of city students meeting with Mayor Slay last Thursday by clicking here.]

We have rescheduled the Urban Go-Team Activity #1 for Saturday, March 31 from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM.  The map above is an aerial view of the neighborhood surrounding Crossroads School (Crossroads is located at the site of the red push pin).   You can click on the photo to see an enlarged version of the area.  On March 31, we will be doing a walking tour of the neighborhood.  What's the benefit of this exercise
besides...besides a little exercise?  Improving our urban observation
skills.  Within just a few blocks of the school is a myriad of land use -- single family dwellings, multi-family dwellings, commercial use, government buildings, office space, park land, and
much more.  Most vibrant communities are diverse such as the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood where Crossroads is located.  On Saturday, we'll divide into groups and walk the streets of the neighborhood and make a series of land-use maps.  We'll reassemble at Crossroads and put together our observations.

We are firmly committed to the notion that communities can best be designed to meet citizen needs if the citizenry is intelligent and informed.  On March 31 we hope to sharpen your "urban intelligence" and provide you with more vital information.

Civitas will once again have a program this summer in which students can intensely learn and act upon urban issues in our metropolitan area.  We'll do some studying, we'll have lots of field trips, we'll have interesting speakers, and we'll even try out some tasty restaurants.  We're either going to call the program the Urban Go-Team or "Show Me the Money in St. Louis!"

This Saturday's session is the opening session of several this Spring of our "2007 Urban Go-Team: Show Me the Money in St. Louis" project.  It will culminate with a one week seminar the week of July 30 - August 3.

If you are interested in being a member of the Urban Go-Team, it is not too late.  Just show up on Saturday or e-mail us at [email protected].

United Nations Assn. of STL Sponsors Adult MUN this Sunday, March 25

Adults are invited to participate in an Adult Model UN Program on Sunday, March 25, 2007, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., in the Dining Hall of Christian Brothers College High School, 1850 De La Salle Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63141 (off of North Outer Forty Road, west of 270 and just east of the Mormon Temple).

Interested persons should contact Dr. James Dohle at (314) 985-6100, ext. 4010, or [email protected].

The session will be conducted by Arthur Lieber and/or Dr. Jim Kerr.

The cost is a $10 contribution to the United Nations Association of Greater St. Louis.

Delegates may submit countries that they wish to represent by March 10.  Final selections will be conducted and delegates contacted by March 20.  Possible topics include international security; economic and social development; human rights and the responsibility of states to protect their own citizens; UN reform and weighted voting; and global warming.

It is not necessary to submit a resolution but if people want to submit one in advance, they should send it as an attachment to Dr. Dohle at [email protected].

Unfortunately, Civitas Not Going to Civil Rights Game

Again, Civitas was looking forward to taking students to the first annual baseball civil rights game to be held this year in Memphis, TN on Saturday, March 31.  Unfortunately, we did not have enough students sign up to make the trip financially worthwhile.

Nevertheless, a Civitas trip to Memphis at another time is definitely a possibility.  If the Civil Rights Museum there doesn't get to you, it's hard to imagine what will.  But that can be for another day.  In the meantime we can avoid the embarrassment of having the Cardinals appear in this Civil Rights game as they have one (count 'em, one) African-American player (Preston Wilson) on their roster (and by the way, manager Tony LaRussa is having a small feud with him at this time).  What a shame!  What a contrast to David Halberstam's great book 1964 in which he differentiates between the maturely integrated Cardinal world champion team of that year to the almost lilly white Yankee team that they defeated in the World Series.  The one piece of current good news is that Cardinal Hall of Famer Lou Brock is working on a book on Jackie Robinson.  For now, we can only ask, "where have you gone Mr. Robinson -- and all the Redbirds for whom you paved the way into the major leagues?"
