"Urban Go-Team"
Begins this Saturday, March 17
The map at the right is an aerial
view of the neighborhood surrounding Crossroads School
(Crossroads is located at the site of the red push pin).
On Saturday, in our first 2007 Urban Go-Team project,
we will be doing a walking tour of the neighborhood.
What's the benefit of this exercise
besides...besides a little
exercise? Improving our urban observation
skills.
Within just a few blocks of the
school is a
myriad of land use -- single family dwellings, multi-family
dwellings, commercial use, government buildings, office space,
park land, and
much
more. Most vibrant communities are diverse such as the
Skinker-DeBaliviere
neighborhood where Crossroads is located. On Saturday,
we'll divide into groups and walk the streets of the
neighborhood and make a series of land-use maps. We'll
reassemble at Crossroads and put together our observations.
We are firmly committed to the notion that communities
can best be designed to meet citizen needs if the citizenry is
intelligent and informed. On Saturday we hope to sharpen
your "urban intelligence" and provide you with more vital
information.
Don't worry; we'll also have time for
general discussion, and of course, food! By the way, the
preliminary weather forecast for Saturday is 54o and
cloudy.
Civitas will once again have a program
this summer in which students can intensely learn and act
upon urban issues in our metropolitan area. We'll do some
studying, we'll have lots of field trips, we'll have interesting
speakers, and we'll even try out some tasty restaurants.
We're either going to call the program the Urban Go-Team or "Show Me the Money in St.
Louis!"
This Saturday's session is
the opening session of several this Spring of
our "2007 Urban Go-Team:
Show Me the Money
in St. Louis" project. It will culminate
with a one week seminar the week of July 30 - August 3.
If you are interested in being a member of the Urban Go-Team, it is not
too late. Just show up on Saturday or e-mail us at urban-go-team@civitas-stl.com.

Unfortunately, Civitas Not Going to
Civil Rights Game
Civitas was looking forward to taking
students to the first annual baseball civil rights game to be
held this year in Memphis, TN on Saturday, March 31.
Unfortunately, we did not have enough students sign up to make
the trip financially worthwhile.
Nevertheless, a
Civitas trip to Memphis at another time is definitely a
possibility. If the Civil Rights
Museum there doesn't get to you, it's
hard to imagine what will. But that can be for another
day. In the meantime we can avoid the embarrassment of
having the Cardinals appear in this Civil Rights game as they
have one (count 'em, one) African-American player (Preston
Wilson) on their roster. What a shame! What a
contrast to David Halberstam's great book 1964 in which
he contrasts the maturely integrated Cardinal world champion
team of that year to the almost lilly white Yankee team that
they defeated in the World Series. The one piece of
current good news is that Cardinal Hall of Famer Lou Brock is
working on a book on Jackie Robinson. For now, we can only
ask, "where have you gone Mr. Robinson -- and
all the Redbirds for whom you paved the way into the major
leagues?"
