Third and final Prep Session for Conference Goes Well!
The third prep session for the
Civitas Global Conference on "Who Gets To Belong to the Nuclear
Club?" took place last Saturday at Crossroads School. We
had a wonderful PowerPoint presentation
created by Gloria to start things off. It provided
considerable information on the current state of the "nuclear
race." We suggest to all participants that they
download the PowerPoint so that they
can study this important information. The downloadable
copy also includes hyperlinks that will take you to important
resource sites. You can download the PowerPoint by clicking here. Some of you may not
have the PowerPoint program. However,
do not fear. You
can still view the PowerPoint presentation (at least
you can if you have a PC) by using a small program called PowerPoint Viewer. In order to download the program by clicking here.
We also had a simulation in
preparation for the conference. Students were
representatives of fictional medieval towns and had to allocate
scarce resources within their communities. Once one town
allocated far more money to military expenses than any of the
others, then an arms race began among the five towns. The
purpose of the simulation was to demonstrate how easy it is for
the best-intentioned people to fall into the trap of an arms
race -- even a nuclear arms race. This should be good
preparation for the upcoming conference.
We did not
watch any of the movies that we had ready for the prep
session. We were just having too much fun to get to the
flicks. In any case, we'll have one or several of them
ready for anyone who might want to view them on the Friday night
of the conference (Feb. 16).
If you feel that you need more
help with preparation for the conference (particularly if you
have not been able to attend the prep sessions), we will have an
on-line webinar
for you next Tuesday evening, February 13, from 7:00
PM - 8:00 PM. Here's the gig: we'll give you a link to a site on our
intranet where we will present information to you related to the
conference. This will include important documents, perhaps
the PowerPoint,
links to key resources, etc. We'll also give you an
'800' phone number where you can call in and
this will truly be a comprehensive audio-visual learning
experience. Once you tell us that you want to
"attend" this
seminar (from the comfort of your own home, or wherever else is
convenient), we will send you the link and the
'800' number. If you are interested,
please e-mail us now at [email protected].
If you have
not yet submitted your permission form or payment, you can mail
them to us at:
10845
Olive Blvd., Suite #155 St. Louis, MO 63141-7760
As of last week, we now take credit
cards and PayPal for fees. You can conveniently pay your
conference fee by clicking here.

We're Planning An "Urban
Go-Team" for Later This Year
Civitas is planning to have a program
this summer in which students can intensely learn and act
upon urban issues in our metropolitan area. We'll do some
studying, we'll have lots of field trips, we'll have interesting
speakers, and we'll even try out some tasty restaurants.
We're going to call the program the Urban Go-Team!
As we
begin our planning, we need to know who might be interested in
participating. We have put together a short survey for any
student who thinks that he or she might be interested in
participating. If you would like to be part of this
exciting program, we ask that you take the survey by clicking here.
