Second Prep Session for Conference Goes Well; third one this Saturday!

The second prep session for the Civitas Global Conference on "Who Gets To Belong to the Nuclear Club?" took place last Saturday at the Schlafly Branch Library in St. Louis.  We had a guest speaker, Mr. Harry Prah (world traveler and retired high school history teacher).  Harry gave a most intriguing presentation.  His premise was that most conflict among nations has historically been driven by economic reasons.  He argued that nations tend to go to war when they lack the economic resources to at least remain on a level playing field with other nations.  More detailed notes of his remarks are available by clicking here.

Students also had over an hour in which to engage in research while at the library.  Some of them used library computers to get on the internet; others brought their own laptops to utilize the wireless connections; and others us reference computers (not on-line) and good old fashioned books in the library.  Students need to complete their research sheets before the conference begins.  If you do not have a research sheet, you can access it by clicking here.

Meeting this Saturday, February 3

Our third and final prep session will be this coming Saturday, February 3, at Crossroads (map) from 9:00 AM - Noon.  We will not have any guest speakers this week.  We'll open with a PowerPoint created by Gloria which illustrates many of the key elements of the current nuclear arms race.  The PowerPoint raises many questions which can generate a considerable amount of our discussion in the actual conference on February 16-17.  We will also show you how you will be able to download the PowerPoint from our web site to your own computer.

We will also have a simulation on a non-nuclear issue.  This will provide an opportunity for all delegates to get a feel for what the discussion in the actual conference will be like.  No need to try to prepare for the simulation; we'll spring the topic on you Saturday morning.

The third item on Saturday will be a review of the important details related to the conference including times, accommodations, meals, resources, maps, fees, permission forms, research forms, etc.  While this part of Saturday's session will not lead the league in excitement, it will provide you with the key information that you need in order to be a successful delegate.  We'll keep it short.

Finally, we will show a movie relevant to the issue of "Who Gets to Belong to the Nuclear Club?"  We are interested in your feedback on which movie.  Among the ones that we are considering are:

  1. The China Syndrome -- a thriller about a meltdown at a California nuclear power plant (Michael Douglas, Jane Fonda, Jack Lemon, Wilfred Brimley)
  2. The Day After -- the story of a fictional nuclear war and how people in Missouri and Kansas try to cope after the war (Jason Robards and intentionally lesser known actors and actresses)
  3. Testament -- the story of a fictional nuclear war and how people in California try to cope after the war (Jane Alexander, William DeVane, Kevin Costner, Rebecca De Mornay)
  4. On the Beach -- set in 1964, the northern hemisphere is destroyed by World War III; radiation is heading south and Australians and others try to cope (Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins)

It is possible that if interest in the movies is high, we will try to set another time the weekend of Feb. 9-11 to see a second movie.  If you wish to comment on your preferences now (or later), you can do so by going to our blog.
