MIDDLE SCHOOL WORKSHOP BIG SUCCESS!

Nearly 1,000 middle school students attended the Civitas model U.N. workshop last yesterday (Monday, November 13).  It was held the Khorassan Room in the Chase Park Plaza.  The program included a video on the model U.N., as well as a PowerPoint presentation with considerable information on how the U.N. works and the roles that students play as delegates.  We also had an interactive activity in which students discussed a mock resolution on scarcity of textbooks in two schools.  In an exciting conclusion to the morning, Los Flamencos (a flamenco guitar and dancing group) performed for the students!

Middle School teachers and students can also access country rosters for each of the nine Spring dates for the model U.N.  The rosters are available at http://civitas-stl.com/civ0607/MS/MS-country-rosters.htm .

We extend special thanks to four high school students who were of considerable help to us.  They are:

Devarati Das (Metro)

Morgan DeBaun (Rosati-Kain)

Megan Favignano (Rosati-Kain)

Zora McGinnis (Metro)

We extend special thanks to the Catering & Sales Department of the Chase-Park Plaza as well as the Chase's Swank Audio-Visual unit who played instrumental roles in helping the workshop go so well!

If you have any questions about anything that has taken place to date (most particularly the country draft), or any upcoming activities, please do not hesitate to contact Lisa Granich-Kovarik at [email protected] or (314) 865-4704.

 HIGH SCHOOL MODEL U.N. THIS SATURDAY!

Regarding the High School Model U.N.:  Click here

After several weeks of hard work, Civitas students will participate in their Fall Model U.N. session this coming Saturday, November 18.  This follows our final preparation session for the high school model U.N. was last Saturday, November 11.  During that workshop we reviewed all the basic components of how the model U.N. works.  During the second half of the session, students began writing their own resolutions.

We want to remind all students that we would like to receive their resolutions by midnight this coming Wednesday (actually 12:00 AM on Thursday).  If a resolution comes in later, we will still try to have it printed for the session, but we cannot guarantee that.  Resolutions should be e-mailed to us at [email protected].

We have complete information on the conference on our web site.  Just click on the button below.

Included in the information is the  presentation that we showed last Saturday.  For those of you who tried to play the presentation on line last week and had trouble, we think that we have worked out the kinks.

Please remember that the High School Model U.N. will be on Saturday, November 18 at the downtown Radisson Hotel (map) from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM.  Parking is available in a garage to the north of the building.  You can bring your parking tickets to us for validation or reimbursement.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

We need to receive delegate lists for each school from either faculty advisors or student leaders.  You can enter information on our on-line form by
clicking here, or download a copy of the form by clicking here (PDF) or here (MS WORD).

Election Night Watch Last Tuesday!

.

Thanks to the students, staff, and parents who came last Tuesday evening to Civitas' first biennial Election Watch.  We followed both local and national races, and even though our activities ended before the close races were decided, we had quite a bit of excitement and some excellent insight.  By the way, if you are interested in comprehensive results from the election, CNN has an excellent web page at http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/.

WILL DEMOCRATIC CORRUPTION FOLLOW REPUBLIC CORRUPTION?

The Democrats made a clean sweep of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, November 7.  Polls show that one of the factors in the Democrats victory was public frustration over corruption by Republican politicians.  However, it does not take too much history to remember the Republican sweep in 1994 when one of the key issues they used to sweep the Senate and the House was to play on the publics condemnation of corruptness among the ruling Democrats.

Our question is, "Do you think that the upcoming cycle of Democratic power in Congress will be characterized by similar corruption to what Republicans have exhibited recently, or do you think that the Democrats will be better at restraining themselves?

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY WORKSHOP ON CHINA FINE SUCCESS!

Last Sunday, November 12, freshman students from Washington University gave an outstanding presentation on current issues with China.  A most attentive crowd was on hand in Wilson Hall with countless Civitas students.

We extend our deep thanks to all the staff and students from Washington University who made the program go so well!

What do you know about China's

role as a Global Power?

* China's impact on the Environment

* China & U.S. Relations, China & North Korea

* China, Oil & Energy

* China & Freedom of Speech

We invite YOU to a forum to discuss these issues & more.

We hope that the Washington University students will be able to give another presentation of the program next Spring during the first part of a Civitas high school discussion session.  We'll keep you informed on developments.
