CIVITAS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BOOTH at
INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE "FESTIVAL of NATIONS"

Tower Grove Park
The International Institute of St. Louis' annual "Festival of Nations" is this weekend, Sat., July 22 and Sun., July 23.  The Festival of Nations is an outdoor multi-ethnic celebration featuring traditional dance and music, ethnic food, cultural and educational exhibits, folk art demonstrations, and international market. Presented by the International Institute and 125 ethnic organizations, the festival promotes awareness and understanding of our community's growing ethnic population. Festival of Nations is the largest event of its kind in our region.

The Festival will be in Tower Grove Park (South St. Louis) on Saturday, July 22 from 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM and on Sunday, July 23, from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Civitas will have a booth at the festival so that we can inform more students, teachers, parents, and alumni about our programs.  We will have printed material available and we are now looking for more individuals who would like to "person" the booth so that we can have "live interactions" with everyone who is interested in our activities.  Because we know that it will be hot, we are looking for students, teachers, parents, and alumni who are willing to work two-hour shifts on Saturday or Sunday so that we have sufficient people to explain Civitas programs but no one will get so exhausted so that their weekend is ruined.  We already have six volunteers, but we need more.  If you are interested in helping us, please e-mail us at [email protected].   Thanks so much!

SPECIAL NOTE: We are re-instituting our student scholarship reward program in the 2006-2007 year.  By participating in a large percentage of our events and producing quality work, we will provide up to $500.00 scholarship grants for students to apply for college, their present school (if they attend a non-public school), summer workshops, or other special educational programs.  Student volunteers who help us this weekend will get BIG POINTS and if they bring other relatives or friends to help, that will add to their point value!

CALENDAR for 2006-2007 SCHOOL YEAR

Listed below is an update preliminary Civitas calendar for the 2006-2007 school year.  The only change since our last newsletter is that we have determined that the High School International Conference in February will be at the Comfort Inn in Maryland Heights.  We feel that the accommodations and food will represent considerable improvements over  previous years.

If you see any problems with the calendar that affect you or your school, please e-mail us at [email protected]
or call us at (314) 367-6480.

THIS WEEK'S SURVEY

Do You Think that the Theory Of An "Axis of Evil" has positively advanced U.S. foreign policy?

In his State of the Union address on January 29, 2002, President Bush made his first reference to his so-called "Axis of Evil:" Iran, Iraq, and North Korea.  For better or worse, the United States is now mired in an occupation of Iraq, Iran is flaunting nuclear weapons and more immediately is playing a key role in arming and supporting Hesbalah and Hamas in their current conflict with Israel, and North Korea just tested seven missiles (six of them successfully).  With a little bit of hindsight now (it will be 4 1/2  months next week), do you think that U.S. foreign policy has been advanced by President Bush citing an "axis of evil" and basing policy on the notion that such an axis is real?

Should Motorcycle Riders Be Required To Wear Helmets?

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, was seriously injured last week while riding his bicycle in downtown Pittsburgh.  He was not cited for any moving violations, although his license was not in order.  The driver of the car into which he crashed was cited for "failing to yield."  Roethlisberger's motorcycle following the crash is pictured at the right.

Pennsylvania is one of seven states that allows some drivers to ride without a helmet; Missouri is one of twenty states with a strict helmet law, and Illinois is one of four states with no helmet law at all.

NOTE: Most of us are aware of the argument against having laws requiring us to wear helmets -- "It is our body and we can choose to protect it however we choose.  Furthermore, no one other than ourselves would be hurt by our choosing not to wear a helmet.

However, Mary Ann Glendon, a professor at Harvard Law School and author of the book Rights Talk, presents a different perspective:

"The exaggerated absoluteness of our American rights rhetoric is closely bound up with its other distinctive traits - a near-silence concerning responsibility, and a tendency to envision the rights bearer as a long autonomous individual. Thus, for example, those who contest the legitimacy of mandatory automobile seat-belt or motorcycle helmet laws frequently say: "It's my body and I have the right to do as I please with it."..This way of thinking and speaking ignores the fact that it is a rare drive, passenger, or biker who does not have a child, or a spouse, or a parent. It glosses over the likelihood that if the rights-bearer comes to grief, the cost of his medical treatment, or rehabilitation, or long term care will be spread among many others. The independent individualist, helmetless and free on the open road, becomes the most dependent of individuals in the spinal injury ward. In the fact of such facts, why does our rhetoric of rights so often shut out relationship and responsibility, along with reality?"

It should come as no surprise that our topic for this week is, "Do you think that all motorcycle riders should be required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle?"  Feel free to draw upon the information provided above.
