 VOL. V, No. 22;  Tuesday, May 30, 2006

Dear Arthur,

Today's newsletter includes:

1. The 2006-2007 Calendar will be available in our next newsletter.  Because we are now on our summer schedule, newsletters will come out less frequently; approximately one every two weeks.

2. In Memorium to Tiffany Marie Souers, Civitas participant, 2003-2005.

3. Repeat Survey on whether President Bush's religious beliefs hinder his ability to make sound foreign policy decisions (the survey had technical problems in last week's newsletter).

In Memorium, Tiffany Marie Souers

We were all terribly shocked and saddened to hear of the most untimely death of Tiffany Marie Souers; Villa Duchesne class of 2005.  Tiffany was founder of the model U.N. club at Villa in 2002 and participated in a number of Civitas activities.  She was an outstanding delegate in our "Africa & the United Nations" conference in the Fall of 2002.

Tiffany was a person who saw the inequities in the world and was committed to trying to bring more justice and fairness to the world.  She was active in numerous service projects; helping others without regard to age, gender, economic background, race, or any other artificial delineation.  We will not only miss her vivacious personality, but also the many wonderful deeds she would have done for others if she had lived a full life.

For more details about Tiffany including how you might honor her memory, please click here to access the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article on her.

Survey on President Bush's Religious Views & His Foreign Policy

NOTE: Please accept our apology in not including a working link to the survey in last week's newsletter.  As a result, we received no responses.  The link is correct today, and hopefully as many of you as possible will respond to the survey.

On May 22, 2006, Reuters News Agency reported the following from London regarding the issue of President Bush's religious commitments and his ability to make sound foreign policy decisions:

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- U.S. President George W. Bush has alienated Muslims around the world by using absolutist Christian rhetoric to discuss foreign policy issues, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright says.

"I worked for two presidents who were men of faith, and they did not make their religious views part of American policy," she said, referring to Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, both Democrats and Christians.

"President Bush's certitude about what he believes in, and the division between good and evil, is, I think, different," said Albright, who has just published a book on religion and world affairs. "The absolute truth is what makes Bush so worrying to some of us."

Our question this week is: "Do you think that President Bush's certitude about the division between good and evil weakens his ability to make sound foreign policy decisions?"
