Civitas Night at the Ballpark: Thursday, June 23 vs. Pirates

We are resuming our summer "Civitas Night at the Ballpark" event. It will be on Thursday, June 23 vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Because many of the MetroLink stations are under construction now, we will go by car. Since the game begins at 7:10 PM, we'll meet at 6:45 PM at Gate 4 -- on the stadium side of the bridge that traverses 7th Street.

There are actually very few games remaining this year with seats available. However, there are plenty of seats available for the game that we have selected.

If you are interested, the cost is $10.00 per person (Civitas will subsidize this activity so that we can get better seats.). To sign up, please complete our short form.

Civitas MetroLink Day on Thursday, July 7

As most of us know, the MetroLink system in St. Louis is expanding westward into Clayton and southward to Shrewsbury through Maplewood. In our Urban Studies program two summers ago, we scheduled a day to travel the entire length of the current system. We did not have enough time to complete the route. This year we'll do it by leaving from Crossroads School (map below) at 9:00 AM and returning to the school by 3:30 PM. We'll stop for lunch in Laclede's Landing and also spend some time at Lambert Airport. If you are interested, If you are interested, the cost is $10.00 for person (Civitas will subsidize this activity so that we can get better seats.). If you are interested, please complete our short form by clicking here.

Do you think that John Bolton should be confirmed by the Senate as U.S. ambassador to the U.N.?

From what you know about John Bolton, President Bush's nominee for U.S. ambassador to the U.N., do you think that Mr. Bolton's nomination should be confirmed by the U.S. Senate?

Last week's question was:

Last week, President George W. Bush was in Russia. In his convesations with Russian President Valdimir Putin, Bush reportedly told Putin that Russia needed to make more progress in implementing democracy. Putin reportedly told Bush that he (Putin) was elected by the people; not an electoral college or the courts as was the case with Bush. Our question is, "Do you think that Bush should have started lecturing Putin on democracy?"

Responses:

1. Yes 1 (12,5%)

2. No 6 (75%)

3. Not Sure 1 (12.5%)

COMMENTS ON THE ISSUE

Lisa Henderson; Fox High School, 2008

If Bush thought democracy was something Putin desperately needed, I think it's fine to express his opinion. However, Bush's gonna need some ice for that burn!!! >:)

Anthony Keel; S.L.U.H., 2006

I don't like Bush, but I do agree that Vladimir Putin is not the perfect man for democracy. However, Bush has no right to lecture him on democracy. We should let other nations proceed down their own paths in government, and seeing all the great things Putin has done for an ailing post-Soviet Russia in economic, military, and national security issues, we have no right to tell them otherwise. If it works, don't try to change it. Putin has accomplished his ends through sometimes authoritarian means simply because there may have been no other way to do it quickly or efficiently. Bush, of course, does not recognize this when he decides that democracy is the only way to bring happiness.
