Final H.S. Discussion Group Big Success!

2004-2005 has been an outstanding year of group discussions for our high school model U.N. students. We have considered a number of topics ranging from the very serious to the somewhat frivolous.

In our final discussion last Saturday, we spent most of the time talking about the change of popes in the Catholic church. Some of the students were Catholic; others were not. Most seemed to feel that it would be desirable for the church to modernize some of its beliefs and practices. One student described herself as a "shopping cart Catholic" -- meaning that she picks and chooses what she wants to take from the church.

Most students were saddened that last Saturday was the last discussion group of this school year. The Civitas staff is going to look into summer activities including discussions and baseball games.

If any student has a question about the discussion he or she may E-Mail us at [email protected].

Fourth Middle School Session of 2005 Successful

We want to thank students and teacher from Northwest Valley Middle School (House Springs), St. Dominic School, St. Gabriel School, and Whitfield who did an excellent job in our fourth Middle School Model U.N. session of the year. The students passed resolutions on slowing the spread of HIV/AIDS, education in Africa, and terrorism in Israel. We have a link to the revised resolutions at the bottom of this article.

Next Wednesday, May 4, students from Hixson Middle School (Webster Groves) and McKinley Classical Junior Academy (St. Louis) will have their session. Resolutions for the day include ones on nuclear technology, literacy rates, economic reconstruction, legalizing drugs, diseases including AIDS, and pollution and renewable energy.

The spring General Assemblies will continue every Wednesday morning until May 11th. Most student delegations have already turned in rough drafts of the resolutions to Civitas for feedback and are now working on improving and revising them. If you haven't done this yet, you still have time to send those resolutions our way! We've been continuously impressed with the critical thinking and creative problem-solving students exhibit in their resolutions. We're looking forward to watching more present their resolutions at the spring General Assemblies and working with their fellow students to tackle these serious world problems.

Civitas Picnic on Saturday, May 7 followed by "The Interpreter"

The annual Civitas spring high school picnic is just a little over a week away. It will be on Saturday, May 7, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM. This year we have a new location (Deer Creek Park in Maplewood). We will supply beverages, paper products, cups, etc. We would like to have everyone bring some food for a "pot luck" meal.

We have a softball diamond rented from 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM. After 4:00 PM, we will "go to the movies" to see the recently released "The Interpreter." It is a mystery involving an interpreter at the United Nations. Professional and amateur reviews have been most positive.

Do you think that police officers should have to live in the city where they work?

The city of St. Louis and the state of Missouri just worked out an arrangement where St. Louis City police officers can live outside the city after seven years of service. Previously, they had to live in the city while working in the city. Our question is, "Do you think that police officers in a city the size of St. Louis should have to live in the city?

Survey on Residence Requirement for Police Officers

Last week's question was:

In the state of Missouri, automobile drivers are required to wear seat belts. However, they cannot be pulled over simply because a law enforcement officer notices them driving while not wearing a seat belt. They can only be ticketed for a seat belt violation if they are pulled over for another possible infraction and are not wearing a seat belt.

Many other states allow law enforcement officers to ticket a driver who they observe not wearing a seat belt. A bill to establish a similar policy in Missouri is currently before that state legislature.

Do you think that the Missouri legislature should pass a law that would permit law enforcement officers to ticket a driver solely because he/she is not wearing a seat belt while driving?

Responses:

1. Yes 5 (100%)

2. No 0 (0%)

3. Not Sure 0 (0%)
