Discussion Group Last Saturday Afternoon!

Our final high school discussion group in March, 2005 was last Saturday, March 26. Most of the discussion was on the Terri Schiavo case, with almost all students feeling that Ms. Schiavo's stated wishes to not be kept alive by "extraordinary measures" should be honored. We also discussed standardized testing at schools. Almost everyone thought they were a farce. You can view outstanding discussion on this subject by clicking on the video link here. We also have photos from the discussion session. You can access them by clicking here.

The next discussion will be on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Crossroads School (map.). We will return to our morning time of 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

If any student has a question about the discussion he or she may E-Mail us at [email protected].

Middle School Update!

The General Assemblies are right around the corner! Next Wednesday, Long Middle School, St. Mary Magdalen, Queen of All Saints, and Saeger Middle School will convene at Creve Coeur Government Center to debate their resolutions and see how much their hard work has paid off. They'll be discussing several timely topics: safe drinking water, AIDS, poverty, nuclear problems, refugees, and child soldiers. We expect both lively debate and spirited cooperation between the delegates as they grapple with these difficult issues.

The spring General Assemblies will continue every Wednesday morning until May 11th. Most student delegations have already turned in rough drafts of the resolutions to Civitas for feedback and are now working on improving and revising them. If you haven't done this yet, you still have plenty of time to send those resolutions our way! We've been continuously impressed with the critical thinking and creative problem-solving students exhibit in their resolutions. We're looking forward to watching them present their resolutions at the spring General Assemblies and working with their fellow students to tackle these serious world problems.

Middle School Resolutions!

Do you think that the space shuttle program should be continued?

The shuttle Discovery is scheduled to lift off from Cape Kennedy, Florida in May. It will be the first shuttle launch in over two years, when the Columbia had a disastrous re-entry and the entire crew perished. Do you think that the Shuttle Program should continue, or should another program for manned space exploration be inaugurated?

Last week's question was:

Terri Schiavo suffered a devastating heart attack in 1990 at the age of 26. Ever since, she has been in a coma, and despite heroic efforts by the medical community, her condition has essentially remained stable. Most neurologists say that her brain has been irreversibly damaged. After years of litigation, a Florida court recently ruled that her feeding tube could be removed because she had expressed such a desire to her husband and others. Last weekend the U.S. Congress passed special legislation seeking to have the tube reinserted. Do you think that this is an issue that should go to the U.S. Congress?

Responses:

1. Yes 1 (10%)

2. No 9 (90%)

3. Not Sure 0 (0%)
