Dear Arthur,

This week's newsletter has information on this Saturday's high school discussion. Please note that because of college board exams, this session will be in the afternoon. We have updated information on the status of resolutions for the upcoming Middle School sessions. Finally, we have a new survey on whether Congress should have intervened in the Terri Schiavo case.

Discussion Group This Saturday Afternoon!

Our final high school discussion group in March, 2005 will be this Saturday, March 26. It will be a rare afternoon session because of college board exams in the morning. The discussion will begin at 1:00 PM and conclude at 3:00 PM at Crossroads School (map.). If any students are interested in going to a late afternoon movie following the session, we will be happy to help arrange that. Please E-Mail us in advance [email protected].

Our discussion will be on topics ranging from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's proposal for expanding the Security Council from 15 to 24 members, to steroids in sports, and the case of Terri Schiavo.

We have new photos from our February population conference. You can access them by clicking here.

We also have new video from the conference which is available by clicking here.

Middle School Update!

It is two weeks before the first of our six Middle School Model U.N. sessions this spring. Teachers have now submitted all the necessary resolutions for April 13, but one is still needed for April 6. Most of the resolutions that have been turned in are now on our website. The Civitas staff continues to work on providing feedback on the resolutions and is sending them back to the students for suggested revisions.

So far, the quality of the resolutions has been very good. We are looking forward to outstanding sessions in April and May.

Middle School Resolutions!

Do you think that it is the business of Congress to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case?

Terri Schiavo suffered a devastating heart attack in 1990 at the age of 26. Ever since, she has been in a coma, and despite heroic efforts by the medical community, her condition has essentially remained stable. Most neurologists say that her brain has been irreversibly damaged. After years of litigation, a Florida court recently ruled that her feeding tube could be removed because she had expressed such a desire to her husband and others. Last weekend the U.S. Congress passed special legislation seeking to have the tube reinserted. Do you think that this is an issue that should go to the U.S. Congress?

Last week's question was;
Seven baseball players and four baseball executives have been subpoenaed to testify about the use of steroids by players. The committee issued subpoenas for documents and for testimony from the baseball players Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, who are retired, and Jason Giambi, Rafael Palmiero, Sammy Sosa, Curt Schilling and Frank Thomas. They are expected to testify this Thursday, March 17, 2005.

Do you think that it is the business of Congress to investigate steroid use in major league baseball?
