Dear Arthur,

This week's newsletter has a review of last Saturday's high school "population crisis" as well as a middle school update. We also have a new survey on whether Congress should be investigating steroid use among baseball players.

"Population Crisis" Last Saturday!

As a follow-up to our Population Conference in February, we sponsored a "population crisis" last Saturday, March 12. The scenario that students wrestled with was one in which a private pharmaceutical company had developed a birth control contraceptive that could be dissolved in drinking water. It was already in use in China. The Food & Drug Administration in the United States had not yet approved it and was in fact speaking strongly against it.

Limited testing had been conducted; more might come under the aegis of a United Nations agency.

A complete description of the crisis is available by clicking here.

Middle School Update!

It's been a busy week for Lisa and Bobbi in terms of middle school resolutions. For the first two session dates, April 6 and April 13, almost all of the resolutions have been turned in and are on the website. Currently the Civitas staff is working on providing feedback on the aforementioned resolutions and getting them back to the students by the end of this week. (If you haven't turned your resolutions in yet don't sweat it, there's still time!)

Some of the teachers in attendance of the February 28th meeting might remember Lisa's goal to have resolutions on the web and commented on two weeks prior to their session date. Thanks to the hard work from teachers and students (and Lisa of course!) this is becoming a reality. Kudos!

Do you think that it is the business of Congress to investigate steroid use in major league baseball?

Seven baseball players and four baseball executives have been subpoenaed to testify about the use of steroids by players. The committee issued subpoenas for documents and for testimony from the baseball players Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, who are retired, and Jason Giambi, Rafael Palmiero, Sammy Sosa, Curt Schilling and Frank Thomas. They are expected to testify this Thursday, March 17, 2005.

Last week's question was;
Early next month, the Educational Testing Service will begin including an essay section in the S.A.T. college admissions test. Students will have twenty-five minutes to work on the essay and then a remain three hours twenty minutes on the remainder of the test. The essay portion will count as 1/9 of the test. Do you think that including an essay portion on the SAT makes it a more fair test for college admissions?

Responses:

1. Yes 2 (25%)

2. No 4 (50%)

3. Not Sure 2 (25%)
