April 7th Middle School UN Session a Success

On April 7th, students from Cathedral, Crossroads, Our Lady of Fatima, and St. Francis Cabrini met to collaborate on 5 UN resolutions. Students examined resolutions concerning Infant Mortality, Religious Persecution, Malnutrition, Deforestation, and Education. After much dialogue, dozens of amendments, and participation from every country, 4 of the 5 resolutions were passed.

This week, Hixson, Mary Queen of Peace, and St. Dominic Savio will meet for the April 21st U.N. session. All Middle School U.N. sessions are held from 9:00 AM until 12:00 NOON at the Creve Coeur Government Center (see link to map below).

Last High School Discussion of the Year This Saturday

This Saturday, April 24, is the final discussion group of the year for Civitas high school students. The key word for the day could be anticipation. Think about everything that will happen between this discussion and our first one in the Fall.

The June 30 deadline for self-rule in Iraq will pass. Will the Iraqi Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds be able to set up a government whereby they can peacefully live together? How will they feel about ruling their country while over 130,000 American troops are still in their land? How will the U.S. be able to get out of Iraq and save face? What kind of trial will there be for Saddam Hussein?

On the home political front, will John Kerry follow through and win the Democratic nomination? Will Dick Cheney remain George Bush's VP? Will either political convention feature anything of interest? How many presidential debates will be planned for the Fall?

Medicare, Social Security, welfare, housing, food, sanitation -- will any of these issues be addressed in a thoughtful and productive manner?

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday and peering ahead to a most active summer.

High School Picnic & Award Session on May 8

In each of the last two years, our Spring high school picnic has been rained out. This won't happen this year, because .......we're planning too much fun. We'll have food, softball, gossip, and presentation of our awards for the year. We will be presenting seven to ten seniors with college scholarships of $500.00 and we will be presenting seven to ten underclasspersons $250.00 scholarships.

We'll have more information on the picnic in next week's newsletter.

Sleep Deprivation

Citing a lack of sleep by many students, Duke University in Durham, NC is eliminating all classes that begin before 8:30 AM. This means that the first classes of the day begin 30 minutes later than at most universities. Do you agree with the new policy of Duke University?
