Dear Arthur,

We have another short newsletter this week with more detailed information from the Civitas Middle East Conference. You can now read the results of the conference, view photos, and tune in to video.

We do have a new survey on holiday shopping. We also provide results from last week's survey on Thanksgiving.

Middle East Conference Major Success! (Updated)

Once again, we want to extend our thanks to forty-three students and nearly a dozen faculty advisors and members of the Civitas staff who contributed to a most successful Conference on the Middle East last weekend. Students worked in three committees and the results of their deliberations are now going through the final phase of editing. In addition, we have over 100 fine photos (mostly courtesy of Marian Brickner) and some excellent video (Bobbi Clemons). The links to the photos and the video have just been posted and they are listed below this article.

We are particularly grateful to St. Louis Post-Dispatch Washington bureau chief Jon Sawyer who presented a most informative and stirring keynote address on Friday evening. Jon has traveled throughout the Middle East and written extensively from the region. Most of all, he warned all of us to be careful of the "law of unintended consequences" when dealing with such a volatile area.

We also thank all the workers at the DoubleTree Hotel at the airport who did much of the "actual heavy lifting."

Survey on Holiday Shopping

It is indeed holiday season again. We ask a rarely raised question. What, if any, percent of the money that Americans spend on holiday gifts do you think would be better spent to help poor people in the U.S. and/or around the world?

Previous Survey Results (New)

Thanksgiving, the holidays -- they're here. Some people love these holiday; others consider it the worst time of the year. Last week we solicited your thoughts about Thanksgiving.

Responses % #
1. It is a wonderful time of the year. 65% 14

2. It's okay; nothing great! 25% 5

3. Neutral 5% 1

4. I could live without it. 5% 1

5. It is amongst the worst times of the year. 5% 1

Total: 22

The sentiment of the respondents was overwhelmingly "pro-Thanksgiving." The only two curmudgens were staff of Civitas. Maybe that's because they have so much fun working. ????? We have some interesting comments below which reflect concern not only for personal happiness but global well-being as well.

Becca Kunce; Maplewood-Richmond Heights, 2007

I really like spending time with my family that I haven't seen in a long time and a little pie goes a long way!

Diana Jones; Jennings, 2004

Yeah, some pretty harsh ones. Like isn't it ironic that one minute the pilgrims want to be friends with the Indians, then the next kill them off. Thanksgiving is nothing but a reminder of how cruel and ungrateful the pilgrims were. They just used the Indians for their knowledge of the land, then inhumanely slaughtered them tribe by tribe. And they had the NERVE to call them savages!

Brian Carlin; S.L.U.H., 2006

Well you get off from school, good food, and get to play cards.

Aaron Craig; Sumner High School, Vice-Principal

I always look forward to Thanksgiving. It gives me a chance to see family and reflect on the many things we have to be thankful for. I will always be grateful for the fond memories. Do you remember taking groups of seventh and eighth grade students on field trips in 1971? I remember going to the Red Barn and seeing who would get back to school first! That is just one example of fun times that always brings a smile to my face. Thanks for being a part of my life!! --Aaron

Raquel Rodriguez; Home School, 2006

I love Thanksgiving. Sadly it's also a holiday that can be really depressing for people. It makes me sad knowing there are people on this day who are sad or don't have something to eat.
