Dear Arthur,

In this newsletter, we have information about media coverage of our summer Urban Studies program. We also reflect on the St. Louis floods of 10 years ago and continue our poll on the St. Louis public schools.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also want to visit our web site by clicking on the link below. We have a good deal of current information, and through the year we will be working on building up our archives from previous years.

Civitas in the Media

On Thursday, July 24, two staff members (Arthur Lieber & Gloria Bilchik) as well as three students from the Urban Studies program (Angie Bingaman, Bobbi Clemons, and Rachel Kunce) were on KWMU (90-7 FM)'s program "St. Louis On the Air" to discuss experiences in the program. Host Mike Sampson peppered us with a number of fine questions and listeners came close to, but didn't quite, stump us. If you would like to listed to the audiocast, just click on our link below.

Also, students from the Urban Studies program will be appearing in August on a television show produced by Double Helix, locally originated TV in St. Louis City. We will have more information on that for you shortly.

Post-Dispatch Features Series on Floods of Ten Years Ago

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is publishing a series of articles on St. Louis Flood of 1993 and how the metropolitan area has changed (or not changed) its development plans in the wake of the flood. Much of what has been written in the Post is further confirmation for the students who were in the Urban Studies program that Chesterfield Commons is not necessary an aberration. Using Prof. Mark Tranel and Dan Lehocky's term, the "ecological footprint" of the St. Louis metropolitan area is getting bigger and bigger. Above is a photo of part of the Chesterfield Commons as it appeared ten years ago in the Flood of 1993. Below is a link to the Post-Dispatch articles as well as past video from Channel 2 (when it was an ABC affiliate).

Survey on St. Louis Public Schools
The St. Louis Public Schools are undergoing considerable change this summer. If you had your choice of "druthers," which path would you suggest to best serve the needs of the students of St. Louis?
