Dear Arthur,

In this newsletter, we have extended information about our summer Urban Studies program that just concluded. We also have a poll on the topic of the future of the St. Louis public schools.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also want to visit our web site by clicking on the link below. We have a good deal of current information, and through the year we will be working on building up our archives from previous years.

Civitas in the Media

The Civitas Urban Studies Seminar has drawn considerable media attention. On Friday, July 11, the Post-Dispatch printed an article about our visit to the Continental Building in mid-town St. Louis. It was authored by architecture critic Bob Duffy who really caught the spirit of what we were doing. A link to the article is provided at the bottom of this story.

This Thursday, July 24, two staff members (Arthur Lieber & Gloria Bilchik) as well as three students from the program (Angie Bingaman, Bobbi Clemons, and Crystal Williams) will be on KWMU (90-7 FM)'s program "St. Louis On the Air" to discuss experiences in the program. The program is from 11:00 AM until Noon!

Civitas Summer Urban Studies Program Concludes

The Civitas Summer Urban Studies program concluded last Friday, July 18. Eleven students completed an intense but very rewarding program in which they met numerous leaders in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Collaboratively they tackled the issue of urban sprawl and how to best meet the needs of "disenfranchised" members of our community.

On Friday, students spent the full day in an "Urban Council" session considering proposals that they had authored. Measures were passed on downtown planning, providing a more "bike-friendly" community, bring job locations and workers' homes closer together, beautifying North St. Louis, and providing incentives for more families to move into the city of St. Louis.

The photos and essays are available by clicking on the "Summer 2003 Activity Index" link below. We thank all members of our group who have contributed at least one essay.
