Greetings!
We have information on our new, improved internet
site, our summer Urban Studies seminar,
Civitas night at the ballpark, and
several other activities in this newsletter.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also
want to visit our
web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and through the year we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.
Civitas Introduces New Web Site
Using a little more modern technology, Civitas has
reformatted many of its web pages to make them
easier to find and navigate. We now have drop-down
menus from the top of the page as well as logical link
buttons on the left side of many of our pages.
The internet has become more important to us through
the years. We had more "hits" this year than ever
before. With the growth of our site as well as this
weekly e-newsletter, we have reduced our mailings to
four or five a year and save several thousands of
dollars in paper and postage.
We hope that you find the new site helpful and
convenient. We know that there are some gaps in it
now and "Murphy's Law" tells us that there are quite a
few errors that we have not yet found. We ask that
you E-Mail us at [email protected] to share your
comments with us and most particularly to let us know
what problems you might encounter. Also, if there are
additional features that you would like, please let us
know that as well.
If you go to our web site and still see our previous
home page, just click on your "refresh" or "reload"
button and the new one will appear. You may want
to "re-bookmark" it.

One or two Summer URBAN STUDIES Openings Still Available |
|
We remind all high school students that Civitas will
have its second Urban Studies institute this
summer. It will run from Monday, July 7 - Friday, July
18.
We have information from last year's Urban Studies
program available from one of our new web pages. The
page can be accessed by clicking on the link at the
bottom or this article. When you get to the page, you
can browse around for information and also go to the
Application Form.
We will have more information on the calendar for this
summer's events in next week's newsletter.
The focus of this year's seminar will be on "urban
sprawl." This is the phenomena whereby urban
communities expand their geographic area at a much
higher rate than their population. As a result, people
are more spread out, metropolitan areas are further
dotted with "box stores," more miles are driven,
and "neighborliness" is reduced.
St. Louis is unique in that the problem is exacerbated
by the existence of over ninety separate municipalities
in St. Louis County alone. In the seminar, we will
explore the concept of government consolidation
leading to possible better urban planning.
The sessions will run for two weeks from 9:00 AM -
2:30 PM, with the possibility of Wednesdays off.
Students will be paid a stipend for participating in the
program. We want to line up all interested students
shortly. Again, if you are interested, please go to the
web site below. You can access the application form
from there.

2003-2004 Civitas Calendar Now Released |
|
Along with our new internet site, we have released the
Civitas Calendar of Events for 2003-2004. We have
several links to it on the new web page so that it is
possible to get information just for our high school
events, middle school events, or 6th grade events. We
also have a new graphic web calendar that gives
detailed information on each activity. You can access
it by clicking on the link at the bottom of this story.
We have more activities planned than ever before,
including far more emphasis on Urban Studies and other
domestic policy issues in the Spring.
Included will be two major conferences and several
other new special events. There will be NO
high school activities scheduled for school days. This
is a change.
We ask that when teachers and students review the
calendar they check it against their school calendars
for next year. We want to take actions now to
prevent conflicts with school events. We cannot avoid
all such problems, but we certainly can change certain
dates so that they do not conflict with obligations that
students at a number of schools have.
No events are scheduled to conflict with SAT or ACT
college admissions tests.

New SEARCH capabilities in our intranet site! |
|
Many of our readers have used our intranet site
(www.civitasassociates.intranets.com) to participate in
our polls, on-line discussions, and for announcement.
We have some important material in the
Documents section of the web site. We will be
adding considerably more in coming months. In the
meantime, we have now added an important
search capability to the document section.
When you go to the Documents section, simply
click on the "advanced search" section and make sure
to check the Search contents of file
attachments box. You will then have access to
the entire text of all of our documents. We will have
more information about this feature as we approach the
2003-2004 school year.

Civitas Cardinal night at the Ballpark |
|
On Wednesday, June 25, Civitas is sponsoring a "night
at the ballpark." The Cardinals will play the latest
version of the "Big Red Machine" -- the Cincinnati
Reds. Can Albert, Edgar, Jimmy, J.D., Scott & Co.
outslug Mr. Griffey, Jr., Adam Dunn, Austin Kearns,
Aaron Boone, and their cast of cohorts? Join us at the
ballpark to find out.
We will be leaving from the DeBaliviere MetroLink
station at 6:00 PM and returning at 11:00 PM (or one-
half hour after the conclusion of the game). You can
access a map to the DeBalivere station by clicking on
the event on our new interactive web-based calendar.
The ticket cost will be $10.00 per person (Civitas will
pick up the different in actual cost). We ask that
students and friends who want to attend please sign-
up for the game on our web site. You can access the
sign-up page by clicking on the link at the bottom of
this story.
We hope to have a fine turnout and watch the
Cardinals (who by the way are the "official team of the
peace movement in the U.S.") engage in an exciting
intra-division game.

New Poll |
|
The majority of our respondents in the past week think
that summer school is a good idea for students who
have struggled during the regular academic year. Now
back to a global issue.
If it is true that the there is no evidence of Weapons of
Mass Destruction (WMD) in Iraq, and if the Bush
Administration somewhat fabricated that argument (as
suggested by Assistant Defense Secretary Paul
Wolfowitz), was the war against Iraq worth it?
a) Yes
b) No
c) Not Sure
