  • Dear Arthur,

Civitas has just hired one of the jewels of the Washington University Class of 2003, Ms. Abbey Hatcher. In this newsletter, we are pleased to introduce her to you.

We remind you that school is drawing to a close for many and planning for 2003-2004 is in full gear. Civitas is expanding its programs for next year. Before this school year is out, we would love to talk with administrators, teachers, and students from interested schools for next year. We will be working to contact you this month and into June. We would appreciate it if you could try to reach us as well.

In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also want to visit our web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of current information, and through the year we will be working on building up our archives from previous years.

    Abbey Hatcher Joins Civitas Staff!

Civitas has been enriched and the service that we provide you enhanced by the addition of Ms. Abbey Hatcher to our staff. Abbey just graduated from Washington University last Friday. Many of you have already met her because she worked with Civitas as an intern during this spring semester. Most of her contact was with middle school teachers and students, but her job responsibilities will now entail all aspects of Civitas work.

Abbey is talented in personal relations, writing, design, and strategic thinking. Much of her work will initially be in the areas of recruiting and fund-raising. With next year's more varied program, Abbey will be involved in both our international and domestic programs. She was an initial participant in our community currency project and is now taking a leading role in our further research in that area.

While at Washington University, Abbey studied for a semester in Kenya in East Africa. This summer she plans to go to west Africa and will work for a non-profit agency in Senegal. She is a native of Indianapolis, but clearly a woman of global interests and perspectives.

We thank Ginger Imster of City Academy (and now the Civitas board) and Melissa Ruwitch of Washington University for "match-making" Civitas and Abbey. We look forward to a terrific working relationship.

    New Poll
So often we hear that the issue of abortion does not rank high in importance to the American people. We have been somewhat skeptical of that observation, and our poll of last week bears evidence to that. We had more responses to this question (26) than any other that we have previously posted, and more guests (6) participated in the poll than ever before. The tally from the poll is that 50% support the 24-hour waiting period for a woman in Missouri to get an abortion and 50% oppose it. Interestingly, five of the six guests oppose it -- lending minimal evidence to the notion that conservatives seem to "come out of the woodwork" whenever there is a poll. No one indicated that they were "not sure" on the issue.

We'll take a week off from the serious stuff and go with a baseball question (sorry, Maura!). Do you think that the Cardinals should trade J.D. Drew for a top- quality relief pitcher?

    a) Yes
    b) No
    c) Not Sure
