  • Dear Arthur,

It seems that the focus is already shifting from Iraq to Syria. On Monday, President Bush, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, and even Secretary of State Colin Powell issued warnings to Syria related to "harboring" refugees and weapons from Iraq. Will the war resume on a different playing field? That will be today's poll question.

What's Going On Behind the Scenes?

With such much media focused on the war on Iraq and with so many people not watching the news because of their own "combat fatigue," the question arises as to what is going on with other issues in Washington, in state capitals, and in city halls.

Believe it or not, Newt Gingrich commissioned the establishment of a U.S. government web site to help citizens be more informed about their government. It's called "Thomas" after Thomas Jefferson. You may want to check it out to learn more about what is going on in governments besides the prosecution of a war.

Third 8th Grade Model U.N. Big Success
We want to congratulate students from Parkway South Middle School and St. Dominic Savio School (Affton) for a fine job at last week's (April 9) 8th grade Model U.N. There was very constructive discussion and debate which took place against a background of excessive noise. The outcome from the foreground of activity was that four out of six resolutions were passed; all of them amended in the process. The resolutions can be accessed by clicking on the link below. Then you should click on Item 6.

You can also access photos from the session from the same link. Click on Item 6a.

Final High School Model U.N. on Saturday, April 26
It has been since December that we have had a regular high school Model U.N. session. Our third and final session is on Saturday, April 26. It will be at Forest Park Community College from 9:00 AM 0 12:00 Noon.

Information on how to get to Forest Park Community College, how to access previous resolutions, and how to get updated country rosters are all available through the link at the bottom of this story.

We would love to receive additional resolutions. Our deadline to receive them is Wednesday, April 23. You may E-Mail them to us at [email protected] or fax them to us at (314) 367-7742.

The world has changed considerably since December. The U.S. controls more territory but has less respect than it did in 2002. Are human rights more protected now than several months ago, or are they more endangered? Is proper attention being paid to environmental concerns, or are they just an after-thought? We welcome resolutions, discussion, and voting on these and other topics in our final high school session of the year.

Next High School Discussion this Saturday, April 19
Our last high school discussion was on Saturday, March 30, just as the United States had gone to war with Iraq. It was a time when the U.S. seemed to be struggling to accomplish its goals. Now that Baghdad appears to be under "coalition" control, questions remain as to what happens next. This can be the first question among many that we address in our next discussion group.

This next High School discussion group will be at Crossroads School (link to directions below) on Saturday, April 19. It will begin at 9:00 AM and go until 11:00 AM. The snacks will be terrific as always!

As usual, we are open to any and all topics for conversation.

    New Poll
Last week, over 64% of respondents indicated that they felt that "coalition" countries should be responsible for bearing the main cost of rebuilding Iraq.

There is now "chatter" that the U.S. is considering invading Syria to follow up on supporters of Saddam Hussein and the weapons that they may possess. Our question is:

Do you favor the United States taking military action against Syria in the case that Saddam followers and their weapons may be hiding there?

    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Not Sure
