Dear Arthur,
We have news this week on sessions of the 6th and
8th grade Model UNs as well as informal discussions
amongst high school students. It is exciting to have all
levels working so well at one time.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also
want to visit our
web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and through the year we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.
Excellent HS Discussion Last Saturday; Next One on March 29!
We had an outstanding discussion with high school
students last Saturday on the conflict involving the
United States, Iraq, and the United Nations. The
discontent with the Bush Administration was so high
that people were saying that they were "proud to be
an American" in spite of the president.
Our turnout was relatively low; we could use more
people with more perspectives. We encourage
students to come to our next discussion.
It will be Saturday, March 29, at Crossroads School
(map below) from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Again, we urge
you to exercise your right to free expression in a
democracy and to join us in enlighted debate.

6th Grade Model U.N. Under Way |
|
Each March, our Model U.N. program is highlighted by a
week of 6th grade sessions. This is the week in 2003.
We have sessions Mon., March 17 - Thurs., March 20
on the campus of the University of Missouri - St. Louis.
In yesterday's (Monday's) session, we had students
from Ralph Bunche International Studies Middle School
and Bush School (there may be an irony names of
those schools considering current world events). The
students did an outstanding job of debating a
resolution that provided equal educational opportunities
for women as well as men. Amendments were passed
to ensure that women had equal access to classes in
math, science, and physical education. Additionally,
provisions were included to ensure that there were
classes on reproductive health for both women and
men.
Funding was a difficult task. When that topic arose, it
seemed that many of the students took off
their "international hats" and put on their "American
hats." In an unusual turn of events, many stated that
the United States should NOT pay for programs in other
countries because these countries clearly "hated" the
U.S. now and the U.S. did not owe them anything.
Hmm, is this collateral damage from a war that hasn't
even begun at this writing?
We look forward to the other schools that will be in the
program the remainder of this week. We have set up a
series of web pages with photos from each session.
You can access them by going to the web site listed
below.

New Poll |
|
Last week's somewhat complicated poll revealed that
over half the respondents believe in the "Just War
Theory" of Augustine and Acquinas and also believe
that the prospect of U.S. military action against Iraq
would violate that "Just War Theory." Apparantly there
is a different view at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW in
Washington, DC.
Let's have a straight-forward question this week. Do
you favor a U.S. attack on Iraq without U.N. approval?
a) Yes
b) No
c) Not Sure
