  • Dear Arthur,

Our Frivolous Model U.N. was postponed last Saturday and will be this Saturday, along with our February "crisis scenario." We now have more photos from MUNUC to view. We're on the road to more 8th grade classrooms, and our poll this week may not be too exciting, but the results may make future ones more exciting.

In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also want to visit our web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of current information, and through the year we will be working on building up our archives from previous years.

Frivolous Model U.N. rescheduled for this Saturday following "Crisis Scenario"

Our annual Frivolous Model U.N. was postponed last Saturday due to inclement weather -- or more accurately the threat of bad weather. We have rescheduled it for this Saturday, Feb. 22, at Crossroads School (map at bottom of article).

We will be "piggybacking" the Frivolous MUN on our February crisis scenario. This may seem a bit absurd, but so does the world.

Last year's crisis was on a hypothetical smallpox epidemic emanating from Rome, Italy and threatening to spread around the globe. Students broke into two groups and did an outstanding job of brainstorming solutions.

This crisis will run from approximately 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM with the Frivolous from 11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon. Once again, we will have outstanding refreshments!

As we previously reported, twenty-eight Gateway Model U.N. students attended the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago (MUNUC) earlier this month.

"Civitas High School" (Gateway Model United Nations) represented Ethiopia and the Seychelles.

We now have more photos from the conference on the web besides the lovely one of Laura and Maura below. You can access them by clicking on the link at the bottom of this article.

    8th Grade News
We are less than one week from our February 24 meeting with 8th grade teachers to select resolutions for the Spring sessions. We have visits this week to St. Gabriel the Archangel School (St. Louis), Holman Middle School (Pattonville), Hixson Middle School (Webster Groves), and Bunche International Studies School (St. Louis).

Our first spring session of the year will be on Wednesday, March 26 at the Creve Coeur Government Center.

    New Poll
Last week's poll showed that slightly more people felt that the U.N. would suffer greater damage than the U.S. if the United States chose to pursue an independent route from the U.N. regarding Iraq.

This week's poll can only be described as procedural. Up until now, we have kept the identities of respondents to our polls anonymous. Some students have requested that we change the settings on the polls so that individual identities can be revealed. Our question is:

Would you be comfortable with an intranet polling system in which the identities of respondent were known?

    a) Yes
    b) No
    c) Not Sure

Results for this week at least will remain anonymous. It will take an overwhelming of "yes" respondents to the poll for us to change the system.
