  • Dear Arthur,

This week we have highlighted information on the World Federalists Conference on "Dangers of Unilateralism." This should be a most engaging conference. High school juniors and seniors can apply for an all-expenses- paid trip to the conference in Washington, DC by writing an essay.

On the high school front, we can report that we had an outstanding prep session last Saturday for students going to MUNUC. On the eighth grade front, we report the postponement of a meeting scheduled for later in January. All this, and more, in our second newsletter of the year!

In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also want to visit our web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of current information, and through the year we will be working on building up our archives from previous years.

World Federalists Sponsor Conference on "Dangers of Unilateralism"

We have been informed by UNA-STL activist Ron Glossop that World Federalist Association is sponsoring a conference on the "Dangers of Unilateralism." It seems that it could not be a more timely moment for such a gathering.

The conference will be Thursday, March 27 - Sunday, March 30, 2003 in Washington, DC. The World Federalist Association of Greater St. Louis will provide transportation, registration, meals, & lodging at the Capitol Hill Suites Hotel for a college student or a high- school junior/senior to attend this national WFA convention.

If you want to be a contestant for this subsidized trip, write a 3-5 page typed essay (double-spaced) consisting of two parts. In the first part tell us about your background and why you would be a good person for us to send to this meeting. In the second part share with us your thinking about the problems our world community faces and how we might deal with them more effectively.

In exchange for this subsidy the St. Louis WFA expects you to give us a brief written report about the conference & what you learned from it. (This helps us raise money for next time.)

You can access more information on the conference by clicking on the link below.

MUNUC Prep Session #2 Goes Very Well
Thanks to all the students who were in attendance at last Saturday's preparation session for MUNUC. We covered a considerable amount of ground and Andrew McMahon's idea of the Ethipian and Seychellian caucuses seemed to work out quite well. We hope that you are continuing to research your countries and the issues before your committee.

The third and final preparation session for MUNUC (Model U.N. of the University of Chicago) will be on Saturday, January 25 at Crossroads School (map below). The prep session will be from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. The first hour will be a simulation for MUNUC; the second hour will be the viewing of a "Twilight Zone" related to global issues, and the third hour will be a free and open discussion on topics of the students' choices. Outstanding refreshments will once again be available.

We thank everyone who submitted their position paper on time last Saturday. If you have not done so yet and you can fit it into your priorities, please bring your position paper to our meeting on January 25. As stated previously, we are less concerned about the quality or authenticity of your position paper than we are about your efforts towards learning about your country and the issues before your committee. We know this is something we cannot really measure, but we hope that you share the goal of learning rather than just cranking out words. The issues before the committees of b>MUNUC this year are very thoughtful ones. Those of you representing Ethiopia will have definite interests to defend or advance. Those representing the Seychelles will be more flexible to play the roles of "peacemakers." We hope that you are in the process of reading and thinking creatively about your countries and the issues before the committees.

Links to more information about writing position papers available at the bottom of this article.

For those students paying full fare for the trip, please remember to bring your final $140.00 payment of the trip on January 25. If you have any questions about that, please do not hesitate to contact us.

8th Grade Teacher Meeting Postponed from Jan. 27 to Feb. 24.
8th grade teachers: we have a previously scheduled meeting for Monday, January 27, 2003. When we scheduled this meeting, we were hoping to have most of our classroom visits for the year completed so that students would be able to submit resolutions for the spring conferences. We were also hoping that there could be preliminary debate of these resolutions on-line.

Unfortunately, we have not moved at a fast enough pace to accomplish this goal. No problem. We are postponing the meeting from January 27 to Monday, February 24, 2003 at the UNA headquarters from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM. By that time we will have visited virtually all schools and we will all be in a position to select the resolutions for each of the six sessions. We will still have a full month for on-line debate if that is the will of the teachers and students.

If this change presents any problem for you, please let us know. Thanks for your (presumed) understanding.

    New Poll
An overwhelming 76% of respondents to last week's poll expressed a lack of confidence in President Bush's ability to lead an economic recovery that includes the poor and middle income people as well as the wealthy.

The question for this week's poll is:
What do you think is the biggest threat to the United States?

    a) Threats from within the country.
    b) Threats from outside the country.
    c) The two threats are essentially equal.
