Dear Arthur,
We have news about upcoming events with the High
School Model U.N. as well as MUNUC, the
Model United Nations of the University of Chicago.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also
want to visit our
web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and through the year we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.
High School Model U.N. this Thursday.
In just TWO days, we have our one and only full-day
high school MODEL U.N. session of the year. It will be
on Thursday, December 12, from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM at
Forest Park Community College (map below).
We have a number of resolutions that are pending from
our previous session, and they can be accessed by
clicking on the link at the bottom of this article.
Fortunately we have received some excellent new
resolutions for this session. All the resolutions can be
accessed by clicking on the link below.
It is most important for the sponsors of the resolutions
to be at the session on Thursday. They should also
make sure that they are in the committee where their
resolution has been assigned.
Delegates should remember that when they speak
about a resolution, they have three directions in which
they can go: (1) they can ask questions about the
resolution; (2) they can comment on the resolution;
and (3) they can propose amendments to the
resolution.
Finally, it is important to keep in mind the most of the
productive work on resolutions is done in small caucus
groups. The chairperson of your committee will ensure
that your committee has ample time for caucusing.
We will have a chat room discussion on the resolutions
the night before the session. That discussion will be
Wednesday evening, December 11, from 7:00 PM -
8:00 PM. You can access the chat room by clicking on
the appropriate link below.

If you want a pre-printed name tag for the Model U.N. session.... |
|
If you want a pre-printed name tag for the Model U.N.
session, you must pre-register for the session. About
one hundred delegates have done so to date. The
easiest way for a delegate to register is to go to the
web site listed below. Not only do you get the fine
name tag, but you also receive a pre-printed placard.
Perhaps most importantly, you also have the
satisfaction of knowing that you have helped us with
our pre-conference count of delegates!
However, we regret to announce that we had a mix-
up with people who signed up last week. Our server
went down and we lost the names of those who
registered from Dec. 3 - Dec. 7. If people who
registered during that time period could do so once
again, we would be most appreciative and you will have
your name tags and placards. Otherwise, we won't be
able to reward you for your responsible work.

Schedule for the Day |
|
The conference runs from 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM.
Everyone should meet initially in the theater on west
side of Campus (see Highlander Drive on map). After
an initial introduction in the theater, we will move to
the Student Activity Center where the committees will
hold session.
Lunch will be from 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM. Food is
available at the college cafeteria in the lower level of
the Student Center. The cafeteria is offering a
package deal for $5.00 that includes burger
(previously we mistakenly reported that it would be
pizza), French fries, and a beverage. [The alternate
entree for vegetarians will be a grilled cheese
sandwich.] It may be possible to purchase a la carte
from the cafeteria, but this will depend on the relation
between the supply and demand of food on that date.
Students who want to eat "off campus" may do so only
with the permission of their faculty advisor.
Committee Session will resume at 12:45 PM and
continue until 2:25 PM. We will have a final wrap-up in
the Highlander Lounge of the Student Center at 2:25
PM. We're "outa-there" at 2:30 PM!
We will have copies of the resolutions for all delegates
and will distribute them at registration. If you have a
Delegate Handbook and a Universal Declaration of
Human Rights from a previous session or meeting,
please bring them with you. If not, we will have
additional copies available at the conference.

MUNUC Meeting & Discussion Group this Saturday |
|
It is now less than two months until MUNUC,
the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago.
Our first preparation meeting will be this Saturday,
December 14, at Crossroads School (map link below)
from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Actually, the MUNUC
preparation will be for only the first hour of the
session. From 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM, we'll have a relaxed
discussion group on topics of the students' choice. It
is likely that the current situation between the U.N.,
the U.S., and Iraq will be one issue. Since we'll move
into the later part of the afternoon, it will be
acceptable to become a little frivolous with the
topics.
If you are interested in dinner and a movie (and we're
not sure of the sequence of these), we are open to
such an activity. Bobbi Clemons tells us that the
following movies will be among those that are opening
this weekend including "Star Trek: Nemesis" and "About
Schmidt". Go to Yahoo Movies for info on these and
other movies.
As we previously mentioned, due to some confusion on
the parts of both Civitas and MUNUC, we will be able to
send only twenty-six rather than thirty students to the
conference in Chicago. We apologize for our part in
this misfortune. Right now there are thirty students
who applied prior to our November 22 deadline.
If you want to go to MUNUC, you have to show up
at our preparation meetings (unless you have an
unbelievably good excuse). If you want a country
and committee assignment, you have to be there! A
full update on our MUNUC status is available by
clicking on the link at the bottom of this article.
If you have any questions about MUNUC,
please E-Mail us at [email protected] or call us at
(314) 367-6480.
