  • Dear Arthur,

This newsletter includes important information about the upcoming 8th grade workshop at the Khorissan Room at the Chase Park Plaza. Also in the newsletter is updates about our first regular high school model U.N. of the year (including links to the first resolutions that have come in), and a new poll in your preference for the U.S. senate seat from Missouri.

In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also want to visit our web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of current information, and through the year we will be working on building up our archives from previous years.

    8th Grade Workshop This Thursday!

The November 7, 2002 workshop for 8th grade students and teachers will take place in the Khorassan Room in the Chase-Park Plaza. The reason for such a large facility is because the number of students participating has grown to nearly 500. The Khorassan Room (pictured below) can hold up to 1,000 people.

The program will include video and PowerPoint presentations, explanations of how the real U.N. and a Model U.N. operate, a simulated Model U.N. performed by high school students, and we hope a special performance by "Africa Voice," the drumming and dancing group from Cote d'Ivoire that entertained high school students at the "U.N. & Africa Conference" in October.

As of now, the schools and the number of students that they expect to bring to the workshop are as follows:

    1. Cathedral School (25)
    2. Fanning Middle School (50)
    3. Hixson Middle School (50)
    4. Humboldt Middle School (100)
    5. Maplewood-Richmond Heights Middle School (35)
    6. Northwest Valley Middle School [House Springs] (15)
    7. Notre Dame Elementary School (12)
    8. Our Lady of Fatima School (25)
    9. Parkway South Middle School (63)
    10. Ridgewood Middle School [Arnold] (54)
    11. St. Gabriel School (3)
    12. St. Mary Magdalen School (15)
    13. Wydown Middle School (20)

This totals out to well over 400 students. If any other teachers are interested in having their students attend, they should immediately E-Mail or call us.

Delegate Sign-up for High School Model U.N.
The first high school Model U.N. of 2002-2003 will be on Saturday, November 16, 2002 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon at Forest Park Community College. This is a most important session because it essentially "sets the table" for our full-day one of Thursday, December 12. During this Saturday session, resolutions will be introduced, they will be discussed and debated, but probably not passed or defeated. It is more a time to discuss issues in general and to develop working papers. Considerable time will be devoted to caucusing among delegates.

Please remember that each school should have at least three representatives for each country that it is representing. One will serve on the Political & Security Committee; one on the Economic & Social Committee; and one on the Human Rights Committee. In addition, delegations from the countries listed below will have representatives on the Security Council.

    China
    France
    Russian Federation
    United Kingdom
    United States

    Bulgaria
    Cameroon
    Colombia
    Guinea
    Ireland
    Mauritius
    Mexico
    Norway
    Singapore
    Syria

We encourage students to electronically enroll as delegates. Just go to our intranet web site at www.civitasassociates.intranets.com. If you are already a member, then log-in. If you are not, click on "Enter as a Guest." Then click on the bar on the left side titled Model U.N. Sign-up and then complete the form. You can access the web site easily by clicking on the link below.

If you want to register more than one student electronically, then go to our home page by clicking here. Near the top you will see a link to "Click here for the SIGN-UP Form." Click there and you can enroll students "in bulk."

    Collinsville H.S. Submits First Resolutions!
Our special thanks to the students and faculty advisors at Collinsville High School for submitting resolutions for our opening High School Model U.N. session more than two weeks in advance. This week alone we have received nine resolutions from Collinsville. They are now posted on the web and you can access them (and all other future resolutions) by clicking on the link at the bottom of this article.

The deadline for resolutions is Friday, November 8. This will give us plenty of time to get copies printed before the session on Saturday, November 16. The session will be from 9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon at Forest Park Community College. More details will follow in next week's newsletter.

"Civitas High School" Gets Ethiopia and Seychelles for MUNUC
We have just received word from the MUNUC (Model United Nations of the University of Chicago) office that our delegation, known as Civitas High School, will be representing the countries of Ethiopia and the Seychelles.

Ethiopia, located in the "Horn of Africa," will have four to eight representatives on General Assembly committees; one to two on the Economic & Social Council; one to two on the African Union; and one to two on the World Health Organization. The Seychelles is a group of ninety islands (in low tide, but only seventy islands in high tide) located about seven hundred miles south of India. Technically, it is considered part of the African continent. It will have four to eight representatives on General Assembly committees; one to two on the African Union; and one to two on the World Health Organization.

Students may still apply for MUNUC 2003 by going to our intranets web site listed at the bottom of this article. When you get there, click on the blue banner on the left side for MUNUC Application. It is a quick and easy form to complete.

    Delegate Handbook Now Available!
Thanks to some very quick work by Ameren U.E., the 2002-2003 Gateway Model United Nations Delegate Handbook is now available. We will have copies for all 8th grade students at Thursday's workshop. In addition, we will be distributing them at this Saturday's high school discussion group at Crossroads and also be making them available for select schools that are having their own simulated Model U.N. sessions prior to ours on November 16.

High School Discussion Group This Saturday!
This Saturday, November 9, we will have our first high school discussion group in four weeks. Here's a clue as to what we can talk about:

    1. It will be our first discussion since Tuesday's election.

    2. It is possible that new statements will eminate from the White House about policy towards Iraq.

We encourage you to come to the meeting and join in most exciting discussion.

The meeting will be at Crossroads School (map below) from 9:00 Am - 11:00 AM.
