Dear Arthur,
This newsletter includes a report on our outstanding
U.N. & Africa Conference, important
information about our first regular high school
model U.N. of the year, and news of a change of venue
for our November 7 workshop for 8th grade teachers
and students.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also
want to visit our
web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and through the year we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.
News on Africa Conference, Oct. 18-19
We want to thank the forty-six students who
participated in our conference on the U.N.
& Africa last weekend. The feedback from
students and teachers alike was very positive.
The conference kicked off on Friday evening with a
concert by Africa Voice, a group of drummers from Cote
d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). They truly mesmerized the
audience. If you check out the photos available from
the link at the bottom of this article, you will get a
good feel for the level of energy that they brought to
the room and the audience.
Our keynote speaker was also a big winner. Mr. Henry
Iwenofu, born and raised in Nigeria, discussed the wide
range of conflicts that exist in Africa and the difficulties
that the United Nations has when it tries to offer help.
He sprinkled his remarks with cogent humor and left
everyone wanting more. We will try to have Mr.
Iwenofu speak at one of our upcoming Saturday
discussion groups.
Following the dancers and the keynote, we divided into
three working groups of approximately fifteen students
each. The work of each group was outstanding. Key
questions were raised, problems were prioritized,
solutions were brainstormed, and detailed resolutions
were written. Most resolutions were developed after
building common ground and were passed by
overwhelming majorities.
Extensive notes from the conference, transcripts of the
resolutions, and dozens of photos are available by
clicking on the link below. We hope to have video
available as well in the coming weeks.

8th Grade Workshop Moved to Khorissan Room |
|
The November 7, 2002 workshop for 8th grade students
and teachers has been moved from the University of
Missouri - St. Louis to the Khorissan Room in
the Chase-Park Plaza. The reason is that our
numbers have grown so much that we need a larger
facility. The Khorissan Room (pictured below) can hold
up to 1,000 people. We are currently expecting 300-
400 students and teachers.
The program will include video and PowerPoint
presentations, explanations of how the real U.N. and a
Model U.N. operate, a simulated Model U.N. performed
by high school students, and we hope a special
performance (now in the planning stage).
As of now, the schools and the number of students
that they expect to bring to the workshop are as
follows:
1. Fanning Middle School (50)
2. Hixson Middle School (50)
3. Humboldt Middle School (60)
4. Maplewood-Richmond Heights Middle School (35)
5. Northwest Valley Middle School [House Springs] (15)
6. Notre Dame Elementary School (12)
7. Our Lady of Fatima School (25)
8. Parkway South Middle School (63)
9. Ridgewood Middle School [Arnold] (54)
10. St. Gabriel School (3)
11. St. Mary Magdalen School (15)
This totals out to 332 students. If any other teachers
are interested in having their student attend, they
should immediately E-Mail or call us.

Special Chat Room This Thursday Night for U.N. Day |
|
U.N. Day is this Thursday, October 24.
Gateway Model U.N. will mark the event in a
quiet, "stay-at-home" sort of way. Between 8:00 PM
and 9:00 PM while you are watching the World Series
or "Will and Grace," or doing homework, you can drop in
on our special Chat Room for an hour-long
on-line discussion about global events. Just go to our
home page and click on the link to the chat room.
It's easy cyber-living; no transportation, you can
attend while in your pajamas....what could be better?
Naturally, the top issue for discussion will be about the
U.N.'s role with Iraq. Recent reports indicate that the
Bush Administration might wait until the Spring to
attack Iraq, giving U.N. inspectors time to "disarm"
Saddam. We can discuss this, North Korea, issues that
arose from the conference on the "U.N. & Africa," or
most any other topic that you might have in mind.
There will be a limit of 15 people in the chat room at
any one time.

We want your vote on Delegate Handbook Cover |
|
We are sending our Delegate Handbook for 2002-2003
to press this Thursday, October 24 (U.N. Day). We
have two possible versions of our cover. We would like
you to visit the web site listed below, view the two
options, and then vote on the one that you want.
We'll go with the one that has the majority.
The Delegate Handbook will be ready for distribution at
the 8th grade workshop on November 7.
Our continued thanks to Ameren U.E. for underwriting
the cost of the Delegate Handbooks again this year.
