We had an outstanding presentation at last Saturday's high school discussion by David Estes, a Vietnam veteran who currently is teaching French at Parkway South Middle School. You can read more about it in our lead article. Yesterday, we had our first 8th grade teacher meeting of the year and made considerable headway in our plans for 2002-2003. This upcoming Saturday we will have our high school country draft. Things are busy with the Gateway Model U.N. In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also

web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and through the year we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years. David Estes speaks with high school students last Saturday! David Estes, a Vietnam veteran and a French teacher at Parkway South Middle School, spoke with high school students at their discussion group last Saturday, September 14. Mr. Estes described in detail the process by which he was drafted, his training in the army, his extended stay in Vietnam, and his return to the States following the war. In a very somber but clear fashion, he talked about the horrors of war and the following difficulties that he and his fellow veterans had upon returning home. Many of the students present also had relatives who had served in Vietnam. A common denominator was the discomfort that these relatives had in discussing their experiences in Vietnam. For these students, hearing David Estes describe his experiences was not only informative, it was in some cases even cathartic. Our thanks go to David Estes for his continued efforts to inform students about global events and his work towards peace.
