Dear Arthur,
This is a jammed-packed newsletter featuring
information about our Seminar this week on the Rich
and Poor in St. Louis with students from Maplewood-
Richmond Heights School. We once again have
information on our October conference on Africa. We
continue to encourage readers to become active on our
discussion board and we have our second "Cartoon of
the Week." Finally, we have made our first calendar
change for the 2002-2003.
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also
want to visit our
web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and during this summer we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.
Summer Seminar on Rich and Poor in St. Louis
Civitas Associates is working with six students from
Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School and the
Model U.N. faculty advisor, Ms. Carolyn Jackson, to
conduct on one-week seminar on the rich and poor in
St. Louis.
We begin this Wednesday, July 17 and end on Tuesday,
July 23 (an ideal five day work week with a two-day
break in the middle!). We will be going to poor
communities (Kinloch) and wealthy ones (Huntleigh)
and others in between. We will be interviewing
community officials, documenting our work, and putting
information on the web on a daily basis.

October Conference to be on AFRICA and the U.N. |
|
As we announced last week, the topic for our October
conference will be "The United Nations and
Africa." No other continent has so many resources
and so much suffering. Recovery from Western
colonialism has been slow, and hampered by tribal and
ethnic strife. The U.N. has been an agent for positive
change, most specifically in South Africa. The U.N. has
also stood by and done nothing, as in the conflict
between the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda.
The conference will begin on the afternoon of Friday,
October 18 and conclude late on Saturday, October
19. It will be held at the Clayton Radisson Hotel.
Priority for participation will be given to students who
have submitted their response forms from our June
mailing indicating that they want to participate in
conferences. Other students can apply for this
conference and other MUN activities by
clicking here. Just remember to click
the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
Remember, first come, first served!
Many details remain to be finalized for the conference.
Among these are cost to the delegates (certainly under
$100), country and constituency representation, and
the maximum number of slots available. We will keep
you informed of the resolution of these issues. We are
open to any and all suggestions.

Cartoon of the week! |
|
This week's cartoon is by Robert Gorrell of AOL. It
pretty well speaks for itself. The two questions that
we have for you are (1) Is it in bad taste? and (2)
What does it say about our tendency to
demonize individuals or groups of people? You
can join the dialogue at our discussion forum.
Please feel free to E-Mail us cartoons that you find of
interest or ones that you draw. We would like to make
this a real participatory section of the weekly
newsletter.
