Dear Arthur,
This is a jammed-packed newsletter with information
about our upcoming October conference, a new staff
member at Civitas, more action on our discussion
board, and an exciting summer project with students
from Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School, and our
first "Cartoon of the Week."
In addition to reading our newsletters, you may also
want to visit our
web site by clicking here. We have a good deal of
current information, and during this summer we will be
working on building up our archives from previous
years.
October Conference to be on AFRICA and the U.N.
We are pleased to announce that the topic for our
October conference will be "The United Nations and
Africa." No other continent has so many resources
and so much suffering. Recovery from Western
colonialism has been slow, and hampered by tribal and
ethnic strife. The U.N. has been an agent for positive
change, most specifically in South Africa. The U.N. has
also stood by and done nothing, as in the conflict
between the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda.
The conference will begin on the afternoon of Friday,
October 18 and conclude late on Saturday, October
19. It will be held at the Clayton Radisson Hotel.
Priority for participation will be given to students who
have submitted their response forms from our June
mailing indicating that they want to participate in
conferences. Other students can apply for this
conference and other MUN activities by clicking here. Just remember to click
the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
Remember, first come, first served!
Many details remain to be finalized for the conference.
Among these are cost to the delegates (certainly under
$100), country and constituency representation, and
the maximum number of slots available. We will keep
you informed of the resolution of these issues. We are
open to any and all suggestions.

Annie Burks Joins Civitas |
|
Civitas is fortunate to have just hired Ms. Annie Burks
to work with us in expanding our program. Annie's
initial tasks will include soliciting businesses to provide
scholarships for students who are most active in our
program, exploring plans for an exciting fund-raiser (yet
to be announced), and helping organize our upcoming
conference on the U.N. and Africa (see next story).
Annie is committed to not only studying issues in Africa
and other developing areas of the world, but also
doing something about them. Below is a
message to everyone from Annie.
Hi everyone,
I met the lead singer of U2, Bono, and all of the band
members when I toured with them briefly in 1993. When
I learned over the past year about the work he and his
wife Alison are doing to alleviate health problems,
poverty, debt, and lack of education in Africa, I was
even more impressed with him and his committment to
transcend the deplorable conditions in which people live
throughout the world.
I recall being utterly surprised by his humility and
kindness, and his lack of arrogance; the kind that is
normally expected when we interact with "celebrities." I
hope you enjoy the article that I've researched about
Bono and his organization DATA (Debt, Aid, Trade for
Africa). It basically sums up who he really is
underneath the glamour!
Annie's complete article on Bono and DATA (Debt, Aid,
Trade in Africa) is available by clicking on the link at
the bottom of this article. She has also initiated a
forum on our discussion board. We hope that students
and others will join now to continue the dialogue.

Also on our discussion forum, new topic courtesy of Laura Casey! |
|
Not too long ago, Laura Casey, Rosati-Kain (2004) E-
Mailed us and requested a new discussion forum on
issues related to high school students preparing for
college. Laura wrote, "I've just been doing a lot of
research for scholarships and college visits and the like,
and I thought it would be a good subject that everyone
can talk about and beneficial to be able to talk to other
UN, academically minded, intelligent kids about. (Yea,
intelligent conversation!) I guess the forum message
would be something to the effect of, "Well, we're all
high school students, which means many of us are
going to be college students soon. Hopefully, college
and scholarships searches are going well for everyone,
but I know I have questions, as I'm sure many of you
do. I hope this forum can be a posting area for
questions, answers, helpful hints, scholarship sites,
etc, for those partaking in the college quest. If you
have questions, post. If you have answers, post. If you
know of any good websites for college help or
scholarships, let us know! So, thanks, and get busy
and start posting." Something like that. Edit it to your
like."

Cartoon of the week! |
|
We are inaugurating a new feature in our newsletter --
THE CARTOON OF THE WEEK! Included with this article
is our first image. It is an illustration by Kevin
Kallaugher of the Baltimore Sun.
The cartoon raises the question of whether we
currently have too much security in the United States.
If you want to comment on the cartoon or the issue,
please go to the cartoon section of our discussion page.
Please feel free to E-Mail us cartoons that you find of
interest or ones that you draw. We would like to make
this a real participatory section of the weekly
newsletter.
