  • Dear Subscriber,

We are moving to a new style of weekly newsletter. Most subscribers are able to able to view this in HTML format (the appearance is like a web page). For others, the newsletter automatically shifts to a TEXT format. We have a number of new features in the newsletter. We want to keep you better informed about both global events as well as our local GATEWAY MODEL U.N. activities.

This is the "turnaround" part of the year for us. The 2001-2002 school year is ending and it will be several months until the next year begins. If for any reason you no longer wish to receive our newsletter, please click the link below to ask us to remove you from our mailing list.

Change is in the Works for 2002-2003 M.U.N.

We have just concluded the twelfth year of the Gateway Model United Nations. We introduced new innovations including Fall workshops at UMSL as well as two-day conferences at the Radisson Clayton Hotel. It was an excellent year for hundreds of students and dozens of teachers.

While we are always looking for opportunities to expand the number of students and schools that participate in the GMUN, our main goal is to make it an enriching and enjoyable experience for the core students who are most interested in our program. We always work to "raise the bar" by providing more interesting and challenging opportunities for students. At the same time, we maintain our core Model U.N. activities that provide all students with the chance to learn more about global issues and the 190 member nations of the United Nations.

2002-2003 will mark the first year in which we sponsor both a local seminar at the Radisson Clayton Hotel and also go to Chicago for MUNUC (Model United Nations of the University of Chicago). We will also be offering a year-long on-line Model U.N. International issues confronting the U.N. can be discussed on any day by any student just by logging on to our discussion board on our web site.

Students who excel in our program will become eligible for new awards including scholarship grants for college. We are working on lining up more funding sources for scholarships and other grants to students. We will provide you with more details in late August. We hope that you will join us in the myriad of activities that we will sponsor in the coming year. We are like a cafeteria and you can choose what you like and reject that which is not of interest to you. We want students to become engaged in our programs because they find them fun and educational, not because they are forced to. Come see what we have to offer and join us where you wish.

East Timor Becomes Newest Country to Join U.N.
Amid jubilant crowds of East Timorese celebrating a hard-won independence, East Timor became a fully independent republic-and the world's newest nation- at the stroke of midnight on May 20, 2002. Although nearly three years of UN governance formally came to an end, UN peacekeepers and civilian police are to remain in East Timor as part of a new UN mission to help maintain the country's external and internal security.

East Timor will be formally voted into the U.N. when the new session of the General Assembly opens this September. Being a new country, it represents interesting opportunities for any student who would like to represent it in the upcoming year's Model U.N.s.
